This is one of the noisiest records that I’ve purchased all year, even after two ultrasonic cleanings each on a double cycle. I wrote a song about how, if Elliott Smith were alive, I probably wouldn’t have been the most fun person for him to talk to, […] I’m a superfan, and I know way too much about his music. My copy's is ridiculously muddy and at times quiet during that track, and the lower ends of the instrumental completely drop out in the last minute of the song.

In a press release, Bridgers used the words "crying" and the feeling of numbness to describe its contents. You can sense Bridgers building a community through her work, and it’s evident in Punisher’s credits list, featuring her tour manager (Jeroen Vrijhoef, the deep voice in “Garden Song”) and her bandmates in other projects ( Conor Oberst from Better Oblivion Community Center, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker from Boygenius). Bridgers’ lyricism and honest songwriting is second to none, and her ability to express complex emotions through her music is inspiring.Bridgers thought she might self-title the album but settled on Punisher because it seemed cool and she thought it described her sometimes. Hopefully it’ll come out with a deep clean, but knowing the reputation around Dead Oceans pressings, I’m not holding my breath. The volume seems a little low but when cranked up a bit more the dynamics seem good enough to my old ears!This is Punisher in a nutshell: devastating elegance punctuated by a moment of deeply campy self-awareness. On the album’s epic, freewheeling closer, “I Know The End,” Bridgers orchestrates wails and horns, drums and electric guitar into a sumptuous doomsday swirl, culminating in her own final whispered roar.

Except the disc, a very beautiful booklet with lyrics - as well as illustrations - to go with all the songs is included.A routinely great artist, much of Sufjan's universal appeal comes from his skills as a gifted narrator, pairing personal musings on love and devotion with commentary on American culture, whilst welding folk and electronica, the ambient and existential. We offered the debut LP of her project with Conor Oberst, Better Oblivion Community Center, through the club in 2019, and it’s so exciting for us to be able to offer more of her amazing music. I know that I have in the past, and I guess if Elliott was alive—especially because we would have lived next to each other—it’s like 1000% I would have met him and I would have not known what the fuck I was talking about, and I would have cornered him at Silverlake Lounge.
