About this deal

Josh and Becky have two mums, and while Becky has never been interested in finding out about their donor dad, Josh desperately wants to know about him, feeling it’s the only way he can understand himself.

Proud of Me | Usborne | Be Curious

Josh is desperate to find out who their donor was and Becky begins to have feelings for the new girl, Carli. They didn't care about him when they were still here, let alone when they left, why should Tommy stop everything that he's doing for them? Meanwhile, Becky is planning her mum’s 50th birthday party, helping her friends set up an LGBTQ+ Pride group at school, and experiencing her first crush: unexpectedly, on the new girl, Carli.Instead of being oblivious to this kind of behavior, your parents probably want you to be aware that it happens every day. To start, we cannot make another person feel any certain way, or do a particular task until they are ready to do it for themselves. When Techno and Wilbur move away for college Tommy is left by himself with his father, someone who hadn't even had a conversation with Tommy for years.

I think it would be good to use for a Year 6 class as they begin to change and get ready for secondary school and it would be a nice reminder that it’s okay to not know quite who you are yet, because there’s lots of support along the way. So many themes are covered in the story which centres around the new Pride Group that is formed at school which is a safe LGBTQ+ place but those in the group are not exclusively LGBTQ+ which addresses the inclusive-ness of Pride.Techno was never home anymore and when he was he was always locked up in his room avoiding Tommy, Wilbur would get angry with Tommy, and he would scream at Tommy for little things.

It’s quite an upbeat tale and perhaps loses realism points in how most of the school are accepting (high school is still full of homophobic assholes sadly) and parents whose religion makes them unaccepting of same sex relationships. Homophobia also seemed to be an issue in Becky and Josh’s school, however, the growing support for the school’s pride group offered a beacon of hope. You have every right to be proud of your achievements, your successes, your steps forwards, and your learnings. The author tells the story of 'almost-twins' Becky and Josh in such a way that it's not overwhelming for the reader and explanations are done in such a matter of fact manner that to me it felt like there was a reminder that having same-sex parents should be as normal in a conversation as the traditional and single parent households.Apparently, they wanted to come home for spring break, unlike all the past years when they would just stay at their college and hang out with friends. This novel, while YA/MG is very informative for an adult that doesn’t know much about the LGBTQ movement, I feel, as well as children. Proud of Me tells the story of Becky and Josh, a pair of almost-twins who share the same donor Dad and live with their two Mums. I can only imagine how hard it must have been for students like Becky and Josh, who belonged to an LGBTQ+ family, to experience the same as I did.

The themes that run throughout the book are belonging, growing up, LGBTQIA+ issues, family troubles, acceptance and the importance of friendship among siblings and friends. Becky is struggling to understand her identity when she develops feelings for a girl at school, Josh is struggling to understand where he came from and who his donor father is. With the way, they check up on him, gave him advice, and simply just being there for him to rant too. I thought it was pretty awkward at first, my parents always looked at me as if I was some troublemaker because of my teenage attitude.

His fingers played the invisible keyboard on the stage, he looked at the judges and then at his hand. I already have you sitting out of the group dance because I know if you do that you will overwork yourself. Sometimes, especially if you’ve been feeling a bit blah, the thing you’re proud of could simply be getting out of bed and carrying on with your life. I thought this emphasised the stark differences between their personalities and perspectives as well as highlighting the close bond between them and their shared admiration for their two mums. The main themes of this book, alongside LGBTQ+ are friendship, sense of self / self-acceptance , journeys and family.
