About this deal

I imagine this is the type of whiskey that most drank when most drank Irish Whiskey, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Midleton came from Midleton Distillery and was crafted in honour of the Master Distiller Emeritus Barry Crockett. Pot still whiskey is a style of whiskey native to Ireland produced from a combination of malted and unmalted barley grain, with each type of grain consisting of at least 30 percent of the total mash bill. In 1912, with his name having become synonymous with the whiskey, the distillery officially renamed the whiskey Paddy Irish Whiskey in his honour.

John Jameson opened the distillery shortly after marrying into the powerful Haig family, who owned several scotch whisky interests throughout the United Kingdom. Kind and wise, with a good natured, rapier wit, Paddy was always welcomed and was by all accounts universally beloved. Often, products are aged in bourbon or Tennessee barrels, and then moved to a rare container like first-fill sherry casks for secondary maturation. Still, they all get the job done and don’t stand up to any of the better Irish pot still whiskeys ( Redbreast 12) or malts ( Tyrconnell). Triple-distilled from the finest barley and water from County Cork’s Irish countryside, Paddy matures for years in three types of oaken casks, acquiring its distinctively rich and golden color in dark, aromatic warehouses before being bottled and shipped directly from Ireland. Both Jameson and Paddy’s are blended Irish whiskeys made by combining the separate Irish whiskey sub-types made by Irish distilleries, including grain, malt and pot still whiskeys. With a rich heritage dating back to 1779, Paddy® owes its name to the legendary distillery salesman, Paddy Flaherty.

It’s the same award winning, soft and mellow, distinctive blend of Pot Still, Malt and Grain Irish Whiskey. Compared with other Irish whiskeys, Paddy has a comparatively low pot still content and a high malt content in its blend. A century later, it won first-prize medals in Philadelphia (1876), Sydney (1879) and Cork (1883), along with a gold medal at the World’s Fair in Paris (1878). Teeling Distillery opened in 2015 and became the first new distillery in the capital in over 125 years. And as producers in Scotland, Canada and the United States embraced the new technology, many in Ireland were reluctant to change the formula that had given them the lion’s share of whiskey drinkers. O’Flaherty as a traveling salesman, who was so good that his name became synonymous with the wares he peddled.

There is no change in the liquid from the heritage bottle on the left compared to the new design on the right. First produced in 1779, it wasn't until 1913 that it changed it's name to Paddy after legendary salesman Paddy Flaherty. It was supposed to be (according to my friend) a vastly superior drink to the Irish Whiskey I was more familiar with (Bushmills, Jameson), but didn’t find it to be so. Now, we were on this trip to Ireland with our church Pastor, and they packed him a 6 pack of Paddy’s also. However I recently bought a bottle in the US as a gift for a friend and I was very disappointed in the taste.

The whiskey is very easy going, and while a whiskey aficionado might find it unsophisticated, its simple virtues make it very approachable for casual drinkers and enjoyable for just about anyone. Paddy is a brand of blended Irish whiskey produced by the Irish Distillers subsidiary of Pernod Ricard. It makes a fine whiskey drink (try it in an old fashioned) and isn’t likely to offend with coke, ginger ale or seven-up. Once clear new make spirit is produced, it is time for the next ingredient — oak casks — to impart their signature flavor and color to the liquid.

Before that it had the rather catchy name of "Cork Distilling Company Map of Ireland Old Irish Whiskey". Whether you’re a professional beverage director or a budding enthusiast, our goal is to help you understand the science behind the label so you can make informed choices when you pour. Now if Kilbeggan was as inexpensive as Paddys – I would most times drink it on the rocks with just a very small touch of true Ginger Ale, but since I’m a tightwad I’ll drink Paddys on the rocks (no ginger ale) because it’s so easy to consume with no burn at all. Irish whiskey-makers favor an emphasis on pot still whiskey, and only a few examples of mostly-malt or all-malt Irish whiskeys are on the market today. Don’t let that deceive you, however, since Paddy Old Irish Whiskey is thoroughly middle of the road stuff.

Powers Gold Label is a special edition release of the standard Powers Gold Label spirit and happens to be regarded as one of the best Irish whiskey brands on the market. Being from Cork, Paddy is part of the Catholic wing of the Irish whiskey family, although such distinctions mean little in the modern era of drinks conglomerates. By tradition and practice, these whiskeys are traditionally made from a majority of either corn or wheat. In the 1920s and 1930s in Ireland, whiskey was sold in casks from the distillery to wholesalers, who would in turn sell it on to publicans. Everyone knows that maturity and ageing play a significant role in the taste of whiskey so it should come as no surprise that the Redbreast 12-year-old is an extremely popular Irish whiskey.
