About this deal

The most notable omission is a front shove-it pocket (the large pocket on the outside of the pack), which is a feature we really value for quickly stuffing or accessing gear on the go. This Rook 50 is a part of a brand new Osprey’s series of Rook and Renn packs for men and women, respectively, which they launched for the season 2019.

Because the lid integrates into the main body of the pack, the opening is rather tight as well making for much more of a fishing expedition than we would want from a lid.Since the whole suspension system is THE most important part of the pack, such packs without adjustable hip belts are a failure. To adjust, grab the vertical handlebars along the back of the pack, pull up or down, and slide them into the appropriate canvas eyelet. This is a light pack, in view of its capacity, the volume/weight ratio of 31 liters/kg which is a great number and it is similar to the Osprey Xenith 75 pack.

Two zippered pockets are on the hip belt (one of them shown below), and two mesh stretch pockets are on the sides, those are with dual top and side entrance. You unlock the harness by pulling those two loops on the sides, visible in the picture below, and then slide it up and down along the side rails, and then lock into the desired position by pushing the lock into those loops visible in the picture. It would be nice if the compression straps had quick-release buckles to make them easier to use when stowing items on the side though. There is a lower zipped access to the bottom of the main compartment and a removable divider between the top and bottom of the main compartment, and this all works fine. Really interested in your opinion – I know that is for your case only not mine – but I am interested since you have a tons of experience.Tensioned backpanel can be easily adjusted to fit a wide range of torso lengths while providing ventilation to reduce sweating. The system is a bit clunky and it took some finessing to nail the fit, but Velcro adjustments often are even tougher to tailor and most backpackers only adjust sizing once (or perhaps a second time if you lend it to a friend). But you might want to compare this with Osprey Eja 58 where this value is 49liters/kg or perhaps with Gregory Optic 48 pack where you have the volume/weight ratio 43liters/kg. If you don’t read the product description, you will figure out that the product doesn’t match with your expectations, only after you get it to your hands.
