About this deal

From short overnights to multi-day trips into the backcountry, every backpacker wants the right tools for the job. However, you should also know that both of these backpacks can carry a lot more; in fact, their maximum load capacity is about 40 lbs. I have never had a problem with them digging into my shoulders or chaffing my back on the Osprey Exos 58. Deciding on the size of the pack that you are going to get is very important, and you have consider a lot of different factors.

On the trail, the metal structure helps eliminate sagging—a common complaint in the UL pack market—and the well-padded shoulder straps and wide hipbelt do a great job spreading out the load. Pockets and lash straps cover this model, meaning you can always have the items you want easily accessible at your fingertips.

As expected from an ultralight design, organization is limited to the basics: a large mesh front pocket, dual side water bottle holders, and a top lid with zippered storage on both the top and underside (the underside pocket is mesh and features a key clip). I found the original unisex version of this pack to be perfect with no homemade modifications necessary for better fit. Like most packs, you will have three main points of adjustment: the shoulder straps, the sternum straps, and the hip-belt. The hip belt did a good job dispersing the weight, but know that this is not your traditional Osprey hip belt. Vs the old Exos it may have been a contender but with the updated Exos’ backpanel and harness system its not even close.

In short, this means that your Osprey backpack and all of its components have lifetime protection against damage. We still think Osprey’s own Atmos wins out in this regard (it features Osprey’s Anti-Gravity suspended mesh system), but the Exos isn’t far behind, which is impressive considering its low weight. On vacation in a more "civilized context": my only downside is that the only access to the main pocket is from the top, so go figure how to access that coat right at the bottom. For such a lid-less use, you have an extra integrated flap with buckles, sewn into the top of the pack, which you will use to close the pack. I personally found it difficult to find the right adjustment for my shoulder straps, but once I finally got it dialed in, it carried really well for high mileage days hiking in the mountains. The Exos is the perfect balance of comfort, light-weight and support, all within a package which isn't too hard on the eyes either. We often head out without the lid, and the FlapJacket is a major benefit compared to packs with only a drawstring top closure. I have found that the Osprey Exos 58 has plenty of room for everything I need to pack, even on long distance hiking trips.
