About this deal

It also ships with a pretty handy travel case, which isn’t as fancy as some of the premium designs bundled with other Oral-B brushes on the market but it does its job of keeping the handle and two brush heads safe and secure during transit.

If you would like to learn more about the different types of brush heads, please check out our detailed brush heads article. In terms of battery life, the Pro 2 2500 performs pretty well, especially when compared to its predecessor, the Pro 2500, which was powered by a Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery. Given the cleaning results, minimal design, 3 year warranty and long term value for money, you could do a lot worse. It’s a simple yet clever design detail that works exceptionally well and helps you to brush your teeth the way your dentist would want. I’m having the same problem as Kerry, I don’t think this brush has a working pressure sensor, nothing really changes when I press too hard.

As I explain later in the battery life section of this review, sealed inside the handle is a NiMH battery that lasts up to 10 days on a single charge. The sleek new design drops the rubber grip of the older model, but it’s still easy to handle and easier to rinse clean, while the rear pressure sensor – now a 360-degree ring – can be seen while you’re brushing. And with five different brush modes to cover gum care, whitening and sensitive teeth as well as intense and daily cleans, it’s a good bet for any set of gnashers. However, there are also variants that include a basic, but perfectly functional travel case that holds the handle and up to 2 brush heads. We previously had a Oral-B Professional Care 3000 but after two years the Ni-MH batteries where very bad so I got new ones under warranty.

The lack of a visible pressure sensor isn’t a reason to avoid the Pro 1 but should be something to think about as you consider your options. iO Series:>Oral-B’s flagship range, using a new magnetic motor and redesigned heads for a gentle yet effective clean. Then again I am not all that surprised, because as far as I am aware, the Pro 1 680 has the same battery as the original Pro 680 and the Pro 600 brushes, which for as long as I can remember have been advertised with a 1 week battery life. It also gives an excellent clean, with a choice of six brush modes and three brush heads – CrossAction, 3D White and Sensitive – to cover a wide range of dental needs. Most Ni-MH I’ve used have lasted for a decade or longer, as long as you look after them (occasionally refresh by fully discharging and recharging and never actually leave discharged).

The cleaning action of the Pro 2 feels more aggressive and intense than sonic brushes, which have a lighter and more ticklish sensation. It’s personal preference as to which you prefer, but you do get that invigorating dentist-clean feeling with the Pro 2. e. never allow full discharge or full charge (which is nearly impossible to do) rather than fully charging and discharging to try and obtain more charging cycles. And while we feared the worst from the NiMH battery, it actually lasted a reasonable 43 minutes in our tests. Send in for repairs (a few weeks without a toothbrush is not their concern) or take it back a 3rd time because it is faulty. This strip of rubber/silicon material not only adds a design touch to the handle but actually plays a pivotal role in allowing you to keep a secure grip of it in hand. The Genius 8000 connects via Bluetooth to your phone, giving real-time brushing feedback, an activity diary and gentle chastisement when you miss a brush or finish early.

Last but not least the Li-Ion batteries in an entry level device are hard to beat but remember that Philips Sonicare already had them for years. Its brush heads are made from petroleum-based plastic, which uses up the planet’s finite resources compared to using plant-based plastics. Now two years later I am happy to see that Oral-B use Li-Ion batteries which have such a better life. These act as gripping points for the hand and fingers when in use, these are particularly good if your hands are wet. A visible pressure sensor, more powerful brush motor, longer battery life and additional cleaning modes are all part of the reason it is our top pick from all your options of best electric toothbrushes. You do need to give it a fairly firm push, so those with dexterity issues might find it a bit more challenging. A 2020 life-cycle analysis of electric toothbrushes found that the average brush is 11 times more impactful than a manual toothbrush. In daily use saliva, toothpaste and debris from your mouth will inevitably come into contact with the Pro 1 brush handle.
