About this deal
I had forgotten how dark and twisted this author’s books are, or I might’ve delayed it, and this one was equally grim yet compelling, with a high body count. It was so intriguing to see how the other story develops and ultimately plays a role in the current events. If you have read the other books, there is a lot of character development in here which may have a lot more impact with previous backstory so perhaps try and read the others first – you will not be disappointed!

On the plus side, the hilarious Connie Woolwine from The Shadow Man makes a significant cameo appearance. It works well as a standalone if you haven't read the rest of the series, and has to be one of the best, and most original, thrillers I've read in a long time. She is feisty and dedicated, and when a serial bomber turns their attention to those close to her, she is determined to bring the culprit to justice. I highly recommend this book and one day I am going to sit down and read the whole series again one after the other.I’d like to thank Avon Books UK and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘One For Sorrow’ written by Helen Fields in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. It kept me guessing, often incorrectly, and devouring the book to see if my suspicions were correct. This is an excellent standalone story and there are useful references to what has occurred previously. My main criticism here is with the dialogue - it’s set in Scotland but other than references to the Polis, nobody sounds remotely Scottish and the characters all speak the Queen’s English - even Luc who is supposed to have a strong French accent.

Eight-year-old Stella observes: “When my dad gets angry, it is like lightning and thunder and hailstones. The characters are realistic with problems of their own, combined to mesh together to enclose the main idea of this book…. kind of weird lol but it truly was an amazing story I'd love to say something about the bad guy in the end but I don't want to give anything away! Revenge drives the bomber and you'll slowly see the pattern and worry about favorite characters with every threat. When it happens to sweet, Disney princess–like Sophie and her friend Agatha, plain of features, sour of disposition and low of self-esteem, they are both horrified to discover that they’ve been dropped not where they expect but at Evil and at Good respectively. Also, I really enjoyed Dr Carlisle’s appearance - I am looking forward to seeing him again at some stage. I loved being back in the world of the MIT and following Ava and Luc as they investigate a case where a lone bomber is targeting citizens of Edinburgh.
