About this deal

Neither group will feel short-changed, although the extra functionality gained from using the MV7 in USB mode will be a significant draw for podcasters, streamers and voice-over artists in particular. You can of course still opt to mount the MV7 on a desk arm or any other setup that suits you best, and there is a bundled stand thread adaptor to accommodate this. Finally, no more recording your podcast with a blanket over your head in the middle of a summer heatwave! Provided the MV7 is pointed accurately at the sound source, it performs best within one to six inches, but you can get away with three times that distance. He's been covering games and tech for over ten years and has written for Dualshockers, WCCFtech, Tom's Guide, and a bunch of other places on the world wide web.

The Shure MV7 is a professional-quality USB dynamic microphone, ideal for close mic applications that require vocal intelligibility with a balanced tone. Unfortunately, most consumer grade audio interfaces and mixers only provide about 40dB of gain, which means you'll have to invest in a Cloudlifter or preamp to provide you with enough additional boost. Even if you don’t like the default sound profile, you can use the accompanying Shure MotivPlus app (compatible with Windows, MacOS, Android and iOS) to tweak the settings to your liking. In truth both microphones cover similar ground, but they've been developed for slightly different markets. A touch panel user interface provides control of microphone gain, headphone level, monitor mix blend and muting. Singers will love the ability to record vocal tracks in less-than-ideal acoustic spaces and self-producers will prize its ability to segue from USB laptop sessions to XLR studio recording. It has been used time and time again to record guitar cabs and drums, while the Shure MV7 is mainly for vocal recordings.

It’s that combination of convenience, control and professional-quality audio that make the MV7 ideal for so many content creators and musicians out there. Chris loves getting nerdy about everything from guitar and bass gear, to synths, microphones, DJ gear and music production hardware. Close miking reduces the need for more gain, helps to reject ambient noise and will trigger the bass enhancing proximity effect, which makes voices sound richer. Being able to back off the mic with Far mode can really come in handy if you tend to make those popping 'P' sounds known as plosives while speaking or singing. The SM7B has a much flatter frequency response between 50 and 200 Hz, which means that most voices will retain their desirable warm, smooth richness. At the very bottom of the app window is the compressor slider, and you have one of four options: off, light, medium, and heavy.

Shure has an enviable pedigree in the world of professional audio, with many podcasters and radio pros swearing by their products. We’d choose the MV7 solely for its vocal performance rather than trying to capture instruments with it. The 55SH Series II has a cardioid polar pattern and the Super 55 Deluxe has a supercardioid polar pattern which just means the latter is a little more directional than the former. The mount included in the podcast bundle is good enough for desk recordings, but you’ll want to invest in something better if you’re streaming or need to move the mic out of the way when talking. The internal converter of the MV 7 operates at a maximum sample rate of 48 kHz and with a 24-bit internal resolution.

We’ve also created desktop and mobile versions of the ShurePlus™ MOTIV app that let you access a whole slew of manual settings, including Mic Gain, Mic Mute, EQ, Monitor Mix, Limiter and Compressor.
