About this deal

We come into music docs with relatively mundane expectations of biographical details and sound bites, but Morgen isn’t playing that game from the beginning.

Let’s Dance … Brett Morgen dances as he arrives at the 75th edition of the Cannes film festival for the screening of Moonage Daydream. This makes Moonage Daydream the perfect cinematic experience for the big screen, where the images and music intertwine to become sensory overload. The companion album to MOONAGE DAYDREAM features songs spanning Bowie’s career and includes previously unheard material, unique mixes created for the film and this release along with dialogue from Bowie himself. On Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, the film has a score of 83 out of 100 based on 34 critic reviews, indicating "universal acclaim". Intercut with the fan footage are snippets of sci-fi B-movies, Bowie applying makeup, and what look like home movies of the era.

Morgen connects all the different periods of Bowie's life in a way that pays immense respect to the musician. Amy - Directed by Asif Kapadia, this 2015 British documentary covers Amy Winehouse's life and struggle with substance abuse.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 92% based on 156 reviews, with an average rating of 8. Morgen blasts you with excerpts of rare, behind-the-scenes footage from Bowie's concerts and then shakes the speakers with pulsating music from Bowie's discography. Sinclair also criticized a perceived lack of sufficient coverage for certain periods of Bowie's career, singling out his tenure on EMI America Records and his membership in Tin Machine. Whether it was his incredible and colorful outfits, his idiosyncratic persona, or his unforgettable music, it is safe to proclaim Bowie as one of the most influential figures of the 20th century, which means that a persona as elusive but impressive as Bowie requires a documentary that can capture all of his immeasurable qualities and then some. The only voices in the film are Bowie’s and those interviewing him in televised segments, and he speaks of never wanting to waste a day.In his third phase covered in the last part of the film, Bowie emerges from a two year hiatus where he remakes himself in the image of a suave musical artist often dressed in tailored Saville Row double breasted men's business suits. Morgen had been developing Moonage Daydream for at least four years, announcing the film back in 2021.

And perhaps his adventures in other art forms, like Marcel Marceau-type mime or playing the Elephant Man on stage were slightly misjudged in that he had already absorbed all these things, was already drawing on that type of energy in his rock personae. Bowie is apparently deeply moved by the visual arts as he experiences them while in West Berlin, and this influences his own painting style in his own renderings of oil portraits and related efforts in his other oil paintings. The documentary gives a tender, but honest look at Winehouse both as an artist and human being who lived with great pain, but also great joy. His skill at assembling hours of footage—just look at the excellent “ Jane” for another example—comes through immediately. Morgen's documentary utilizes that same approach, taking fragments from Bowie's life and using that to create the ultimate cinematic experience. The film is divided into nearly two dozen "chapters" in the DVD release with the first hour covering Bowie starting in London up to his departure to West Berlin. Why do the traditional thing of getting interview subjects who knew him or loved him to try and explain his importance to the 20 th century?
