Martell is one of the oldest great cognac houses in the world, with a legacy of more than 300 years since 1715. From the 1990s, however, each Martell cognac came to have a bottle as identifiable as the cognac itself. The audacious swift emblem is also engraved under the label, which is written in a distinctive cursive.

The punt in the base of the bottle has been redesigned with an accentuated curve, evoking the famously round, generous taste of Martell Cordon Bleu.In 1983, following a request by the BNIC (Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac)*, the French government drafted regulations governing the terms used to describe a cognacs’ quality.

The house have also released their own tricentenary edition of the Martell XO to pander to the rich tastes of a great Cognac lover. It has a particularly elite history, having been served to the Queen on her Concorde mission, to being used in Hollywood films, royal weddings and more. The respective electrifying blue and red colours that define these two cognacs catch the eye, and imagination. Incidentally, the reason these abbreviations are in English is because cognac has been exported for many years and the first importers spoke English. The excellence of this Cognac has been well noted by experts within the industry; having recently been awarded a Gold Medal at the 2017 Cognac Masters.

Jean Martell founded his brand vowing only to make the highest quality Cognac; hence the blend of fine terroirs such as that in the Martell XO. The heritage cues of Martell Cordon Bleu – the seal of the Martell family and the eponymous blue ribbon – have been reworked with vibrancy and modernity, with plays on different shades of blue creating a sense of dynamism. The purest way to savour the aromas of Martell XO is to serve it neat, or on the rocks (meaning with ice) with a drop of water.

Martell XO is double distilled from grapes grown in the Grand Champagne terroir of the Charente region in France and aged for a minimum of 10 years in oak casks.There are also some brands of cognac that are classified as Cuvée, which denotes the blend and not necessarily the age of the spirit. The oldest of the great cognac Maisons, Martell has crafted cognacs of the finest quality since 1715.
