About this deal

The Makita DUB186Z is ideal if mobility is an issue, because it’s one of the lighter models we tested and has a compact body and thin nozzle. This cordless leaf blower weighs the same as others in the group we tested, like the Stiga SAB 100AE, but its compact design and long, narrow nozzle makes it feel more manoeuvrable and easier to reach awkward corners. Other leaf blowers that we’ve tested are more powerful and better suited to larger areas, while the Makita DUB183Z is a good choice for smaller areas or less frequent use. It has simple variable controls that can blow very gently indeed, a comfortable soft-grip handle and an angled nozzle.

Makita DUB187Z 18v LXT Cordless Brushless Blower/Vacuum Body

A Makita brushless motor is featured on this blower vac which provides a long service life with zero maintenance requirements. The Makita DUB183Z is a small, compact 18V leaf blower that uses Makita’s standard 18V batteries – which could be handy if you have existing cordless tools. The soft-grip handle, together with the position of the battery, which slots in underneath it, helps balance the leaf blower, making it comfortable to use for longer periods of time. Controls are minimal: there’s a black, variable speed finger-trigger that you just press and away it goes.

Makita DUB187Z 18V LXT BL Blower/Vacuum Bare Unit - FFX

The air volume is far less than the other blowers in the trial and really shows in the Makita 183Z’s ability to shift leaves. The machine has a powerful 18V Brushless Motor with soft start and variable speed controlled by trigger plus cruise control, to deliver 9,000 to 13,500 rpm. The 5Ah 18V battery delivers plenty of power and it has three different power settings – low, medium and high – and offers further control with the pressure trigger switch that must be held down to use. The combination of power, long run time and short charge time help this leaf blower cope just as well in large gardens as it will with patios and backyard. Check out our test of the best gardening gloves to collect them in comfort, and while you’re at it, why not learn how to make leaf mould – a super compost and soil conditioner – as well as how to make your own leaf mould bin.Toolstop Limited is a credit broker, not a lender and is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 737231). For more time you can invest in bigger-capacity batteries – although, if you have yourself a collection of Makita tools, then you can just swap out the battery as you go, too. There are four red indicator lights on the battery – not the charger – to indicate the state of charge.
