Clarke International is a UK company that has been around since the 1960s and supplies powered and unpowered DIY and home improvement tools to the UK consumer indirectly via a number of retail outlets. Nothing contained on this Makita® site should be construed as granting, by implication, estoppel, or otherwise, any license or right to use any trademark displayed on this site without the written permission of Makita or such third party that owns the trademark. The unit runs smoothly, with little vibration, but it still needs to be bolted down to the workbench to ensure it does not move at all. It is powerful enough to handle most DIY grinding jobs and although it can be used with polishing or wire wheels, it will be a little bit on the deficient side for heavier polishing work. In general, you will want to apply light and even pressure when pressing your tool or workpiece against the grinding wheel. Build quality is on the low side, and you cannot apply too much pressure to the grinding wheel otherwise it slows down or even stops. Often used for sharpening tools like blades and drill bits, when a dedicated sharpener is not around , they are also effective for cleaning, buffing, or polishing surfaces. It is reasonably quiet, but vibrates a little bit so it does need to be bolted down to the workbench.

White wheels are better for DIYers - White-coloured wheel s (as opposed to grey or light blue ones) are gentler grinding wheels that make it easier to achieve a sharp edge on a tool, however, they tend to wear down faster than their darker brethren. Although they have smaller wheels than their 8” counterparts, many grinders with 6” wheels are surprisingly heavy. However, a common issue with the Titan bench grinder is the often heavier than expected vibration as the wheels gain speed at start up. To rejuvenate the grinding surface, use a diamond-studded dressing tool to eliminate the metal filings and to expose fresh grit on the grindstone wheel surface. Structurally, the Makita bench grinder is a well-built, sturdy and stable machine as one would expect from a Makita power tool weighing in at about 9.

Get a good 8” grinder that can accommodate a variety of wheel types, and it should provide years of reliable service. It is ideally suited to sharpening tools and blades, although some owners have changed the wheels for polishing wheels which they have used to buff up some of their lacklustre personal possessions. Quality control on Titan-branded machines can also be a bit hit-or-miss with some TTB521GRB units better than others. You can use your bench grinder as an effective buffer or polisher simply by attaching a buffing wheel in place of the grinder. The more powerful the bench grinder and the less well built it is, the more vibration and noise it will generate. The incorporation of a light on the Titan bench grinder is another added bonus and although we like the modern LED bulb incorporated, the brightness of the light is a little bit on the disappointing side. Most commercially available grinders have disk or wheel sizes of 6”, which run at regular speed, and 8”, which is better suited for a slow-speed operation. Fast speeds aren’t usually an issue for heavy-duty jobs for which you will probably want your grinder going at full bore the entire time. Surprisingly for a Makita tool, there is the odd outstanding imperfection with the Makita GB602 bench grinder.

The TTB521GRB also sports larger 8-inch grinding wheels rather than the more common 6-inch ones, providing a more professional grinding experience. Essential for reducing or increasing the speed of the wheel according to the requirements of the job. In addition, the motor heats up after several minutes of use requiring periods of downtime to let it cool. However, like other bench grinders, the BG150CX can easily swap out its wheels for finer after-market ones. Unfortunately, however, not a lot of thought has gone into the use of wire wheels on the Titan grinder as the included one can sometimes partially brush against the wheel guard securing bolts which protrude a fair amount. However, the one saving grace is that the base is made of metal rather than the plastic found on some competing budget machines. The RPBG6 uses the 6" (150mm) diameter grinding wheels, while the RPBG8 runs the 8" (200mm) diameter discs. Fortunately, the slowing or stopping of the wheel rotation only occurs when excessive pressure is applied and is not really relevant to normal grinding practice. Power is given in Watts which best indicates how tough a material can be used on the bench grinder and how quickly material can be removed from the subject being grinded. Smaller disk sizes have a more acute curvature, which might be better suited for certain tasks, while larger disk sizes are generally more versatile.
