About this deal

Each player scores points for each territory they control, as well as bonus points for controlling an entire region, and any points gained from Adventure Cards. He's worked as freelance editor for board game rulebooks and has designed many of his own games as well. And what better time to re-listen to the audiobooks of the original novels than while you glue and paint your collection?

As Sauron’s power grows, the hobbits must resist his corruption by playing cards with matching symbols to advance across a number of tracks on the board, taking haven where they can. In addition to shared boundaries between territories which define routes of attack/defense, numerous special trans-oceanic or trans-sea routes are also marked; for example, the route between North Africa and Brazil. The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game ventures outside of the familiar tales of Bilbo, Frodo and the other heroes of Tolkien’s work in a co-op card game set between the events of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring.

Also, the time limit mechanic, while frustrating in its tendency to arbitrarily determine the winner, does ensure that the game won’t take forever, which is a nice consolation. Risk has been around since the dawn of man, but it only recently started getting some fun and interesting spins on the classic formula, like with Risk: Warhammer 40,000. R. Tolkien’s masterwork was turned into a film trilogy that is now the standard in the high fantasy genre cinema, and it spawned plenty of crossovers and adaptations.

This gives the defending player the advantage in "one-on-one" fights, but the attacker's ability to use more dice offsets this advantage. Lord of the Rings Risk: Trilogy Edition, a board game by Hasbro and Parker Brothers released in 2003, takes the classic game of Risk and transports it into Tolkien’s Middle Earth. European versions are structured so that each player has a limited "secret mission" objective that shortens the game. Almost 20 years after it first hit tables, Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game continues to have a dedicated following among Tolkien fans and wargamers alike, with its detailed models, in-depth rules and epic battles some of the best Lord of the Rings gaming around. RISK: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Edition can certainly look good in any RISK or board game collection, and can also look good when placed alongside the Tolkien books.

Not only is Hunt for the Ring distinct for its hidden-movement take on Frodo’s perilous escape, but it also becomes a game literally of two halves. Count the total number of territories you control and divide that number by 3 (ignoring remainders). In this version, the Fellowship path is the most important factor and must be cherished by both good and evil as their main priorities. The time limit, conveniently, comes in the form of the Fellowship as it makes its way towards Mount Doom.

Another thing I don’t like is the mechanic that allows you to draw Adventure cards – capturing a site of power with a leader. The game was futuristic-themed, featuring moon territories, ocean territories and commander units and offered a number of expansions.

Journey through the Shire and beyond, encounter the Balrog and take advantage of connected ports to make the most of your occupied territories.

Of course if any army is entirely defeated before the Ring reaches Mount Doom, that player has clearly lost! If a player collects either three cards with the same symbol, or one of each, or any two plus a wild card, they may be traded in for reinforcements at the beginning of a player's turn. The Lord of the Rings is less thematic than some of the other Lord of the Rings games on this list, but it’s no lesser as a result. This is the version that can end in the very first turn and it receives much criticism for that fact (setup can take up to an hour with first-time players and then the game could end in 5 minutes). While many familiar faces make an appearance, The Lord of the Rings: TCG puts the players in control of their own adventure. Even better, the rules let players create their own custom Fellowship of characters in place of the original nine companions, with the outcome of battles having an effect on later skirmishes. In War of the Ring, one (or more) players control the opposing forces of Sauron and the Free Peoples of Middle-Earth during the events of The Lord of the Rings.
