About this deal

The shape of a seacoast and the shape of the ocean floor both make a difference in the range and frequency of the tides.

All of this is easily accessible to anyone interested in learning about this special environment, even beginning explorers and young children. Long of interest to me, Nicolson reports on fractals in ways that leaned toward philosophy and had me shaking my head in wonder and delight. Below the stillness of the surface course different currents of endless motion—the ebb and flow of the tide, the steady forward propulsion of the passage of time, and the tiny lifetimes of the rock pool’s creatures, all of which coalesce into the grand narrative of evolution. For all ebook purchases, you will be prompted to create an account or login with your existing HarperCollins username and password. As Nicolson journeys between the tides, both in the pools he builds along the coast of Scotland and through the timeline of scientific discovery, he is accompanied by great thinkers--no one can escape the pull of the sea.

I really enjoyed the in-depth descriptions and creative storytelling, and the prose itself was very thought-provoking and intriguing. The book begins with the author building a tidal pool an investigating the marine life that he finds in it, which I found fascinating.

It is where you can look beyond your own reflection and find the marvellous an inch beneath your nose. For example, when an area covered by the ocean faces the moon, the moon’s gravitational force on the water causes a high high tide. And in Life Between the Tides—a book explicitly about the liminal places where everything is change—his talents are supremely on display. They paused to think but in the end, for a small fee, and with the agreement of Marine Scotland, the government’s sea agency, I was allowed to make some pools on the edge of the bay at Rubha an t-Sasunnaich.Its mostly about random events in Scottish history, with some Heraclitus and Martin Heidegger thrown in. Tide pools are areas that are completely underwater at high tide but remain as pockets of seawater when the tide ebbs. Adam Nicolson explores the marine life inhabiting seashore rockpools with a scientist's curiosity and a poet's wonder in this beautifully illustrated book. Animals that breathe with lungs but depend on the sea for their food such as penguins, seals and seabirds (manutai) live on or near the shore. While the author cited a Jewish-written book on this philosophy, I'm still hesitant to listen to something that came from a hateful mind.
