About this deal

The added tools are for those who are looking to go the extra mile and have any needs with cutting or some other similar projects.

That last item is a small, often angled or hooked knife with a blunted leading edge that’s effective and useful for cutting open plastic clamshell packaging. Despite the steep initial learning curve, it simply feels fun and rewarding to deploy and fidget with, so I don't mind all the practice. Knife people can be quite particular about their blades, and we’re surprised there isn’t an option that offers only a straight blade. This multi-tool is larger than the Skeletool CX, but the additional tools—especially the whistle, fire-starter rod, and blade sharpener—are so nicely integrated into the design that it’s surprising how little bulk they add. These same guys claim to own and use the Wave and hate that they don’t know which blade they are opening until they open it.

Accentuating the Free P2’s streamlined styling is an included pocket clip—a rarity among larger multi-tools. The downsides are that the screwdriver does not lock in the open position (but the knife does), and it lacks a pocket clip. The first thing you’ll notice with the Free P4 is that Leatherman kept the classic butterfly fold design.

Leatherman proudly dubbed this effect “epic haptics” to describe the tactile and auditory feedback you get when everything falls into place with a confidence-inspiring snap.

This multi-tool lasts for years and is backed by a 25-year warranty (good thing, too, since it isn’t cheap). In most cases, the blades and accessories lock in the open position, so we investigated the convenience and strength of the locks.

Although we prefer the stripped-down nature of the Skeletool, the Free P2 does add scissors and a package opener, which we found routinely useful day to day. That said, being that this is a total reinvention of the tool they invented, this would have been the prime opportunity for Leatherman to step away from their marriage to 420HC for their blade steel. These were some specifics on the P2 and the P4 multi-tools, and you should have a clear idea of which unit you need to pick for your projects. We tested the Victorinox Tinker, which has roughly the same tool set as the T4 and Armbar, but it also has problems those tools have solved. In fact, the Skeletool’s pliers, knife, screwdrivers, and bottle opener were all we ever needed to deal with minor fixes and get on with our day. I don't know what else to say, except, if you want a new take on the OLD SCHOOL multitool, that IMO, is PERFECT for EDC, then you might be as happy as I am with my P2.

The carabiner clip does double duty as a bottle opener, and it works better than the openers you find on most multi-tools. Going with either one of these units is not a bad idea as long as you’re a bit aware of the basic use cases. However, for those who need some extra edge and are anticipating the use of a saw or serrated knife, the P4 is a perfect option for these. By locking them into place when fully open, the user can put pressure on the implement while safely completing the job, before manually unlocking the tool to stow it away.I received an advance sample of the P2, one of two plier-based multis in the FREE line that launches this month. This warranty does not cover abuse, alteration, theft, loss, or unauthorised and/or unreasonable use of your Leatherman product. Our biggest concern with the Free P2 is that it’s an entirely new design for Leatherman, so it lacks a long, proven history of durability and success. In our years of continually using this multi-tool since first recommending it, there hasn’t been a single time when the Skeletool wasn’t enough. It could be BBQing during the working week, RVing on the weekends, or going on long camping and hiking trips during vacations.
