Bam, an accident, and then the next thing Maelyn knows, she's gone back six days and their holiday trip is starting over. My childhood best friend gave me Troubling a Star by Madeleine L'Engle for Hanukkah when I was 11 years old, and it's still my favorite book of all time. The lack of communication and the threatened sale of the cottage she visited once a year were just not compelling reasons to have this psychological \”fugue\”.I’m feeling like fancy breakfast, but not feeling like spending fancy breakfast money (or wearing fancy breakfast clothes, for that matter). And at some point, the universe just decides to stop hurling her all over the timeline because it’s seemingly pleased with the adjustments she’s made. It's not bad, but the romance and family dynamics were too vanilla for my tastes, and the story didn't take advantage of the time loop setup at all. In a Holidaze follows main character Maisie, as she celebrates Christmas by visiting her favorite place in the world, a cabin owned by her parents’ best friends. Yes, all of these things literally happen in In a Holidaze, under the guise of “tradition,” but it feels almost like the novel had a checklist for holiday tropes and was determined to check them all off.

Several things happen that make Maelyn realize just how miserable she is and she wishes that she could be happy. Down-on-her-luck Maelyn is a likable protagonist, and it’s easy to relate to her desire to fix her life (even if most readers don’t have the benefit of time travel). Combine the egg yolks, lemon juice, dijon, salt and cayenne pepper into a high powered blender and blend for 5 seconds. In a Holidaze\’ is part \’Groundhog Day\’ and part \’Russian Doll\’ (without the more macabre elements), and just the type of escapism that is needed right now.
