About this deal

Back in 2016 when Arrow released Hellraiser: The Scarlet Box (which only included the first three films), they bestowed each with a 2K restoration from the original 35mm interpositive. It looks much more film-like, is even and banishes the slightly splotchy rendering it had on the previous 1080p releases…and has the knock-on effect of rendering fine detail with that extra little bit of clarity. The box offers a hard cardboard equipment which is very stable and in my opinion very nicely implemented. Also included is five minutes of alternate footage, sourced from an earlier workprint without music or special effects that features more exclusive material. A more contained story than what was to come, it followed a family; Larry ( Andrew Robinson), his wife, Julia ( Clare Higgins) and their daughter Kirsty (Ashley Laurence) as their family gets torn apart (quite literally in some cases) by lust, obsession and murder.

It’s something I find myself coming back to yearly and even had the pleasure of seeing the film on the big screen a few years back at my (now unfortunately shuttered) local cinema. Maybe one day we’ll see his original 110 minute cut and it could be something better than we’d expect. The subtlety of the series is gone, the sexual nature is cast aside other than sex seemingly awakening Pinhead for the first time, and the calm nature of Pinhead has vanished. Her doctor, Phillip Channard is aware of the Cenobites and the puzzle box known as the Lament Configuration and uses the information that Kirsty told him to bring Kirsty’s mother back to life. Also the bonus information is rich in detail and opens a new view on the works of Clive Barker, especially with the Disc 1.

Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment releases on the 23rd October via Arrow Video on Limited Edition 4K UHD and Limited Edition Blu-ray. Previous ones were, like Pinhead, people who had gone through a strange torture, their bodies augmented and enhanced in simple, but disturbing ways. However, Hellraiser IV: Bloodline, the fourth film, actually ends up being much better than its predecessor. All three films are cornerstones of the 1980s horror scene and are all regarded as some of the greatest films in their respective genre, with outstanding practical effects bringing the sick creations to screen in ways that almost felt impossible before. But a mysterious puzzle box will take him further than he can possibly imagine, opening the doors to a dominion where pain and pleasure are indivisible and summoning the Cenobites, whose experiments in the higher reaches of experience will tear his soul apart. With Bloodline, only a comparison to an aging region A Mill Creek multi-film pack was available and this new 4K restoration is light years ahead of that and the image here shares many of the inherent qualities of the first three films – first-generation footage looks astoundingly sharp and detailed, sometime showing the sets to be a little too rickety and cheap looking; colours are deep and rich, while grain is handled nicely throughout (the 18 th century scenes lit mostly by candlelight have the heaviest grain field here but it looks natural and even, with no clumping, freezing or blocking noted). But it’s by no means perfect, and the over-designed nature of the Channard Cenobite and the destruction he wreaks feels like a foreshadowing of the third movie, and leads the final act of the film to be the weakest part of the movie. The workprint (*not* a Yagher cut, alas) which has an alternate score and some deleted scenes is a very interesting watch; will be interesting to see which version of the film people prefer!
