About this deal

This is a great book to read for children as not only does it give an insight into school life - it lets children know that we all experience similar things at school. We understand that not everyone can donate right now, but if you can afford to contribute, we promise it will be put to good use. We agree that ‘The Trial of Derek Drew’ will go down particularly well – I am looking forward to reading the children’s own poems for their trial transcripts! His first book of school poems was published over thirty years ago, but you will almost certainly recognise some of the things that the children, teachers and parents say. Listening to the poem being read expressively will allow the children to detect patterns and get a real feel for rhythm and rhyme.

The line "While the teachers in vein, tried to burgle his brain" is particularly original and imaginative, and therefore causes amusement. A marvellous collection of poems, some funny, some thought-provoking, all written with the inimitable Ahlberg wit and wisdom. Our resources are crucial for knowledge lovers everywhere—so if you find all these bits and bytes useful, please pitch in.Allan Ahlberg is one of the UK's most acclaimed and successful authors of children's books - including the best-selling Jolly Postman series. It has repetition, rhyme, different sounds, nonsense words and changing dynamics which would be great to perform with a class. There are poems about lost scissors, the class hamster, making friends and falling out, the excitement of a stray dog in playground – and the infamous Derek Drew! This is a book that can be enjoyed by both children and adults alike evoking a sense of nostalgia about ‘the good old days’.

In ‘Talk us Through it, Charlotte’, you can hear him talk about the region and read with the local accent.

On the down side, some of the text content is a little out-dated and perhaps considered even a little inappropriate nowadays. He has won numerous awards for his books including, the Kurt Maschler Award in 1986, The Children's Book Award in 1987, the Blue Peter Book Award 2001, and The Children's Book Award: Books for Young Children award 2002.

As well as, ‘The Boy Without a Name’ which follows more of a sombre tone and stays etched within the memory. I think this would be an excellent book to introduce to children, it introduces literature, music and reading all at once.A lot of these poems have a more mature feel to them, which is not a bad thing; just I personally did not enjoy this collection as much. I think that this book could be used in a variety of different ways within a classroom to familiarise children with poetry.

The structure and rhythm is rigid throughout with repetition of the first two lines: "Billy McBone, Had a mind of his own" used to begin each stanza.Highlights include the epic-length title poem, Registration, The Grumpy Teacher Song and Bags I (with the Mrs Butler Blues a familiar expression for any teacher! However, the different aspects of language can also be explored with the class following a dramatic reading by the class teacher.
