Most definitely an essential text that should accompany all individuals as they traverse their teen years. Of all the psychological processes known to science, experiential avoidance—avoiding unpleasant thoughts, emotions, or events—is one of the worst. Humans are different from other animals in that we not only suffer but we suffer about our suffering. The appendix includes a note to scientists explaining that the authors dumbed down many of the Relational Frame Theory (RFT) concepts for the sake of the general public, and they did, but still there is much in here that goes way beyond what an average self-help consumer will push through.

I am very interested in the ideas around ACT therapy and find them very helpful for living a full and rich life. Make sure, though, that you don’t use this exercise as an escape mechanism but as a way to become more fully engaged in life. What if pain were a normal, unavoidable part of the human condition, but avoiding or trying to control painful experience were the cause of suffering and long-term problems that can devastate your quality of life? Unlike Stoicism and CBT which use logic and reason to reframe negative events, ACT uses mindfulness to investigate the nature of the emotions themselves.I find the information I gleamed from this book to be very helpful but the book itself was very dry and repetitive. A useful guide (I used it as a clinician) and picks up on the issues of doing values-based work with teenagers and gives amended approaches. This is a slow, slow read, with too many exercies that do not lead you very far into understaning the authors aims. I skipped the exercises, I just wanted to read and think about mindfulness and cognitive theories per se.
