About this deal

Emergency is a book to be relished, its precise, subtle prose devoid of romanticism yet passionate in its own way.

New for 2024 Award-winning theatre company New Old Friends in association with Yvonne Arnaud Theatre present HOUDINI'S GREATEST ESCAPE which will open at Yvonne Arnaud Theatre Guildford on 08 February and Tour the UK throughout Spring. The Royal Society of Literature has awarded Daisy Hildyard its 2023 Encore Award for her sophomore novel, Emergency. Helen Whyrbow: While reading Emergency I was struck by the intricate, minutely detailed descriptions, particularly of sound. Yeah, and to do it responsibly, and with consideration – but also to find a way to have a really joyful, flourishing life, rather than for it to be a question of painful denial. We are implicated in the moral world of the novel – are, Hildyard invites us, all living inside one pangolin.

Emergency by Daisy Hildyard — a complicated hymn to nature

I’ve found myself really interested in how that technology affects the way the analysts look at these occurrences… Their feelings about it. This incident leads to the memory of playing with the children next door; then to a pet rabbit that ate its young (“Even today, she seems to me very human in the way her principles forced her to self-destruct”).Daisy Hildyard’s first novel, Hunters in the Snow, received the Somerset Maugham Award and a ‘5 under 35’ honorarium at the USA National Book Awards.

Second Body by Daisy Hildyard review - The Guardian The Second Body by Daisy Hildyard review - The Guardian

Airborne pesticides continue to circulate; a ring pull found by the narrator as a child washes up decades later in a seabird’s corpse.Emergencyexplores some of the ideas in fiction thatDaisy Hildyard wrote about in heressay The Second Body, publishedbyFitzcarraldo Editions in 2017. It is a focal point for much of the narrator’s wildlife-watching – sand martins catch insects, falcons hunt sand martins, a kestrel pursues a vole – but also a site of exchanges between her village and the global economy, both conscious and unconscious, industrial and infinitesimal. Although I was uncertain at times about some of her underlying arguments particularly as she seemed, in a rather contradictory way, to be retaining aspects of notions of human versus animal, rather than human as one animal species among many. With everything that is swirling in our world right now, how would you describe where writing is coming from inside of you, and what next you feel compelled to say?

Daisy Hildyard On Writing For The Climate Crisis – Interview Daisy Hildyard On Writing For The Climate Crisis – Interview

The theme of being cut off from the world in the present, as the adult narrator, becomes interwoven with your coming-of-age story about a young girl being immersed in nature. The young girl’s need to love and protect a baby bird or animal and the need to manipulate or hurt it are collapsed together. If the invisible air was loaded with invisible poisons, if my own bloodstream could be modelled by its tiniest contaminant component, then it was only logical to understand that the infinitely detailed world, within and beyond the things that I could make sense of, was dangerous. Her in-laws live in Birmingham; she and her husband took turns driving between there, to spend time with their daughter, and alone in Yorkshire cleaning the house of slime and sewage.Holding my gaze on her I rose slowly and as smoothly as I could, and skirted along the track that ran around the quarry at the top, taking care to make no sudden movement and to give the bird a wide berth so that she didn’t flit.
