About this deal

Fan legend has it that costume designer James Acheson picked up a load of multi-color wool and asked knitter Begonia Pope to create a scarf, and Pope, perhaps mishearing, used *all* the wool, resulting in a scarf that ran 12 feet long. In the annals of pop culture couture, the extraordinary scarf worn by the Fourth Doctor on Doctor Who stands out as a triumph of both whimsicality and comfy-ness. To add authenticity to it all, she included her encounters with each scarf and how she got permission to study them! Perhaps legendarily, she inadvertently used all the wool Acheson had given her resulting in a scarf that was some twenty feet long.

It was used in lots of publicity photos including those from location work on "The Sun Makers" even though the stunt duplicate was used in recording of that story. Like I said, You’ve got a lot of brass to make those assumptions about people you don’t even know, and about something you’ve never accomplished nor probably will ever accomplish in your lifetime. More than likely, he’s probably thrilled to see fans loving his character so much, he’s above such petty things such as “not wanting to share “his scarf” with anybody else”. Another licensed scarf is also being manufactured by Elope (found at Hot Topic and many places online). I suspect I would not have the patience to knit one though, having read horror stories of ‘endless garter stitch’!The above memo isn’t dated, but comes from sometime in the early ‘80s when the BBC sent detailed instructions to a fan’s mother on making the scarf. Select the links above for detailed information about each scarf including patterns, knitting specifications and yarn suggestions. After being shortened slightly, it became a permanent fixture of The Doctor’s costume and since has been copied by fans.

The scarf in its original form was only seen in "Robot" and "The Sontaran Experiment," which was recorded right after "Robot. Take a bunch of earth-tone yarn of different colors’ and stick it in your ‘forte’‘alternating the colors at random times’ until it’s ‘uber’ clear to you that you don’t know what the Hell you’re talking about. The colors are generally brighter than the real thing for their Hero, but their S16/17 replica has very good colors indeed. Costume designer June Hudson created a new scarf design - and the longest - in the subtler guise of thicker chenille in a burgundy color scheme. Our replica is based on the 18ft scarf the Fourth Doctor wore throughout Seasons 16 and 17, initially made by sewing the original to the stunt double's! She used to have a site up that is now archived, where she had very well detailed, very faithful and easy to read patterns for all versions of the scarf, with a simple color guide and sources for her yarns. There are also sections featuring the history of the design, tips for scarf construction, a gallery of scarves knitted by fans (and me) plus some fun ephemera.

It’s happened with latch hook, crochet, knitting, macrame, plastic canvas, cross stitch and embroidery, never very good at that last one. An alternate scarf was introduced and only used in "Image of the Fendahl,""Underworld" and "The Invasion of Time. This guide, written using some of the advice of the friend who knitted it for me, will speed up the process and a beginning knitter can be well on the way to making his or her own.Words I would chose to use to describe Who fans who finish knitting or crocheting (‘…roughly the same result? I made one, with a pattern grid that I could check off when I got done with that stripe, and then promptly lost the pattern grid I had made. Just for fun, I will suppose that the number of rows is the “significand” and the color coded base 60 number is the “manissa”. The Doctor's worn cool bow ties, cricket jumpers, and questionably-colourful jackets, but Tom Baker's supremely long multi-coloured scarf is the quintessential Doctor Who accessory.
