About this deal

There had been whispers and murmurs of discontent from certain quarters, and the British government began to prepare for the inevitable war. This is where we spend the brunt of the book, from 1940 to 1945, as we follow the author’s journey of defiance in the face of a nation. The incredible true story of how of one British soldier escaped a prisoner war camp 200 times to see the girl he loved. If the sexual stuff wasn’t so detailed and explicit then I would have give this book a 4 star review.

It takes young men out of unemployment and creates wealth for Arms dealers, construction companies and medical and drugs corporations. I found myself questioning the veracity of this story at many turns, not because the events are too hard to believe but because of the way our narrator presents them. EXCLUSIVE: Monarch Media has picked up the rights to Ken Scott’s best-selling biography Do the Birds Still Sing in Hell? It is also never made clear whether the letters from Jim’s lover, Rosa Rauchbach, are the original articles or are they what he remembers of them. The first time Horace has sex with Rose (the love of his life and the reason he started escaping over 200 times).

They weren’t exactly well-written, had a lot of unnecessary details, and in my opinion, felt like they belonged in a cheap romance novel. On 25 May 1940 he was taken prisoner and so began the harrowing journey to a prisoner-of-war camp in Poland. Too many almost comical references to erect cocks, moist, welcoming vaginas, moans of pleasure (hers, naturally) and ladies’‘secret places’.

Although Jim was from a time when sexism appeared to be ‘accepted’, Jim’s persistent self-congratulatory remarks about his performance in bed were tedious and only reflected poorly upon his personality: ‘I left Rosa, with a satisfying soreness between the legs’.Otherwise, this book is such a good war story that it’s worth the read- the death march, description of being a POW and the aftermath of the war is so well written. The man didn’t fail to take every opportunity to talk about how much the women enjoyed having sex with them. As we get further and further removed from the Second World War, the amount of people who have witnessed it keeps on ticking down to the point where today very few survivors actually remain.
