About this deal

It reminded me of the two non-fictional portrayals of real-life fantasists, being The Woman Who Fooled The World: Belle Gibson’s Cancer Con, and the Darkness at the Heart of the Wellness Industry and Fake: A Startling True Story of Love in a World of Liars, Cheats, Narcissists, Fantasists and Phonies. The other characters also seemed to have well developed personalities and held their own against a character like Fawn. It is full of eccentric and quirky characters, not to mention the unforgettable Granny, home invasions and book festivals. He made many a run to different homes to assess books the person at the home wanted to sell, and that was interesting enough.

Confessions of a Bookseller by Shaun Bythell | Waterstones

Bythell gives us a real sense of Wigtown's community, that includes many from from various parts of Europe and the American Anna, Shaun's partner for five years, who has slotted into the area with ease, although their relationship breaks up, thanks to what he refers as his fear of commitment, as he continues to miss her. This power game can be played well or poorly, and in these 48 laws culled from the history and wisdom of the world’s greatest power players are the rules that must be followed to win. We have humour, cringeworthy moments, sad times and some laugh out loud moments along with aarrgh Fawn, what are you doing?Whether it’s Adam Kay’s This is Going to Hurt or The Secret Barrister by…the secret barrister, the very British trait of being nosey is reflected in what non-fiction tales are selling well. There are a few rather poignant moments scattered throughout the documented year that managed to elicit emotion from Shaun that may otherwise have been lost among the more lighthearted chapters and offhand comments if it weren't for his neighbors. I very rarely don’t finish a book (this is my first DNF in two years) but honestly, this book isn’t for me. His colleague Nicky is a proud Jehovah’s Witness who often brings leftover food from the local tip to her shifts and regularly updates the Facebook page to make fun of Shaun. A heartening and uproariously funny novel of high hopes, bad choices, book love, and one woman’s best—and worst—intentions.

Someone who is so full of themselves and their business and selfishly could care less about others = toxic relationship.

In this brilliant sequel to The Diary of a Bookseller (2017), Bythell plays the misanthrope to perfection. Having a beautiful garden, and the most extraordinary spell of weather has also added a coat of sugar to the pill. Bythell’s break-up with “Anna” is a recurring theme in this volume, I suspect because his editor/publisher insisted on an injection of emotional drama; he strikes me as someone who would have kept this part of his life completely private if he had the choice. The authors have created a sort of anti-Book of Virtues in this encyclopedic compendium of the ways and means of power.
