If you have not read Tyler and enjoy reading about a character who is relatable, whose life is not earthshaking, but one that is full of hope and possibilities, you may enjoy this as well. So when she discovers a new family – one in which she’s warmly welcomed – why wouldn’t she want to spend time with them?

By 2017, 61-year-old Willa has moved with her second husband, Peter, to a golfing community in Tucson, Arizona (despite having no interest in golf). The chapter detailing Derek’s death in a California road-rage incident in 1997 suggests that Willa’s placatory pattern is firmly set, an impression buttressed as Part II begins with 61-year-old Willa now married to Peter, another man who patronizes her and expects her to cater to his every whim. Willa rediscovers her purpose and enjoys this pseudo family life, and starts to see the cracks in her previous lifestyle.

Its fair to say that the act never quite reproduced the same whirlwind of success again but did continue to have amazing success and the next couple of years reflected the glory established in 1995 but in a more established and mature way. While this decision uproots Willa's life and causes significant turmoil, being depended upon, even relied upon, for the first time in many years, feels tremendously fulfilling. Without fully understanding why, she flies across the country to Baltimore to help a young woman she’s never met. Still, despite those sepia tones, “Clock Dance” finally starts to work in its second half when all its largely superfluous foundation-setting is mercifully finished. Anne Tyler seamlessly and quickly moves us across decades and while without telling us what happens in between, she has a way of letting us understand what those years may have been like for Willa. I've read this author for years, her stories won't shake up the world nor cause any great seismic shifts in the Universe. Their earlier work was harder, similar to Cappella, but once they started releasing covers, their sound became more dance/pop oriented. The big question for Willa is whether she gives in to the emotional blackmail and forsake her own needs yet again or whether she finally goes after what she really wants.Sometimes Willa felt she’d spent half her life apologising for some man’s behaviour,” Tyler comments wryly. As the depredations increase in the occupied zone—food rationing, systematic looting, and the billeting of a German officer, Capt. Willa’s progression into feeling connected, into finding her will, isn’t easy; patterns take courage to break, new language must be learnt. This all seemed all too real but when she finally broke out and underwent a kind of transformation I applauded it but was not convinced.
