We need to question a culture that tells women they must be beautiful to be loved, but that they shouldn’t actually feel beautiful or we’ll find them conceited. They know better, but knowing better is not enough-they still download apps on their phones to airbrush their selfies. And think of trolls and flamers who attack on social media, who think anonymity is their license to say any nasty thing they please.Engeln’s book is thought provoking and will be fascinating for all readers, especially those interested in psychology, cultural studies, media, or gender studies. I hope its message becomes widespread and that we can make positive changes in our culture to decrease beauty sickness. But no matter what type of life young girls dream of, I know there’s a good chance there are two things they really want to be: thin and pretty. While unattractive or fat girls are rejected or experience severe social backlash, girls or women who seem to spend an inordinate amount of time monitoring and focusing on their appearance are banished as vapid and vain. They are ready to fight back against their beauty-sick culture and create a different world for themselves, but they need a way forward.

They’re angry about the media’s treatment of women but hungrily consume the very outlets that belittle them. I know the social sciences are pretty loose with what they accept as evidence, but the author has put about 80% of the weight of proving her points on a series of interviews of mostly young women who were directed to her precisely because they have the beauty sick characteristics she was looking for.
