About this deal

Engeln’s (2017) analysis makes it clear that this isn’t just about aspirations to be pretty, it is about a larger cultural value system that reduces women’s worth to their appearance, the effects of which have ramifications in every aspect of our lives, from the workforce to our safety to how we are treated by men.

How about those of us who are already thinking - a LOT - about what our bodies are able to do, and therefore what our bodies AREN’T abl Another way to respect the fact that your body doesn’t exist just for other people to look at is by dressing in a way that doesn’t distract you from what you’re doing. If it at least acknowledges it and attempted to offer some solutions (or even other resources) for how to have a better image of your body when it ISN'T capable of a lot of things, that would have been much better. Not only does Engeln explain how societal pressures can have a detrimental effect on these young girls and women, but she also explains the extremes these young girls and women will go to achieve what is considered the “ideal” body.

I’m like the average seven-year-old size, and I have curly red hair and green eyes and today I’m wearing a dark blue dress and light blue shoes. We need to question a culture that tells women they must be beautiful to be loved, but that they shouldn’t actually feel beautiful or we’ll find them conceited. They know better, but knowing better is not enough-they still download apps on their phones to airbrush their selfies. And think of trolls and flamers who attack on social media, who think anonymity is their license to say any nasty thing they please.Engeln’s book is thought provoking and will be fascinating for all readers, especially those interested in psychology, cultural studies, media, or gender studies. I hope its message becomes widespread and that we can make positive changes in our culture to decrease beauty sickness. But no matter what type of life young girls dream of, I know there’s a good chance there are two things they really want to be: thin and pretty. While unattractive or fat girls are rejected or experience severe social backlash, girls or women who seem to spend an inordinate amount of time monitoring and focusing on their appearance are banished as vapid and vain. They are ready to fight back against their beauty-sick culture and create a different world for themselves, but they need a way forward.

They’re angry about the media’s treatment of women but hungrily consume the very outlets that belittle them. Fajnie było poczytać o różnych statystykach i badaniach, ale jednoczenie większość z nich nie ma żadnego odniesienia i źródła co sprawia ze są poniekąd wątpliwe. She is not an over the top feminist by any means, so if you are slightly conservative this book will still teach you a lot about society and gender roles. Through this, Engeln is able to compare and contrast these women's and young girl's experiences, to have a better understanding of what constant criticism can do to an individual, while educating her audience.

I know the social sciences are pretty loose with what they accept as evidence, but the author has put about 80% of the weight of proving her points on a series of interviews of mostly young women who were directed to her precisely because they have the beauty sick characteristics she was looking for. Autorka ukazuje kobiety z perspektywy jakoby były one kompletnie zniewolone i wręcz puste, bez najmniejszej możliwości decydowania o sobie i swoim wyglądzie. Ayuda a las mujeres con las que pasas el tiempo a escapar del espejo interno fomentando las conversaciones sobre otros temas. Others are more subtle, like the distracted hours a girl spends obtaining the perfect selfie to post on social media. The thing is--Engeln had some good ideas, and I think her thesis as a whole is something that is worth looking in to.
