And both of those are in contrast to this novel – one which perhaps serves as the author exploring her themes (particularly around religious faith and doubt) that appears in her later novels. Not only that, but it seems John is expected and how often do you turn up at a house you’ve never visited before only to find you are expected? The house is both magnificent and menacing, with "broken chandeliers trailing chipped strings of glass drops," a glass eye constantly changing hands, and empty meat hooks dangling in the kitchen.

Our past is our ancestors, and while we're free to make our own choices, we tend to feel near overwhelming guilt over not carrying on traditions that we maybe feel are outdated. That second novel was a very enjoyable story to read and was perfect for reading on holiday a few weeks ago.

As in Perry's latest book, The Essex Serpent, After Me Comes The Flood is rich with imagery both lush and ascetic, and characters who are never fully revealed, to themselves or to the reader. Heavner isn’t exactly mollified when Tempe, aided by retired police detective Skinny Slidell and a host of experts, puts a name to the dead man.The plot can at best be described as perfunctory and can be barely seen as anything other than a pure device and one which the author quickly discards before moving on to her real interest of themes and ideas. In both books, we feel that the fragile tension could shatter like a glass house in a hurricane at any moment, and both authors hold this tension masterfully. Perry still manages to crank up the tension, but not towards any particular end or neat resolution, and the novel is all the more effective for it.

Whether the king or his main squeeze was predicting a cataclysm or simply indicating that he or she didn't care what came after them isn't clear. Written before Sarah Perry's ascension to an internationally bestselling author, After Me Comes the Flood is a spectacular novel of obsession, conviction and providence.

In After Me Comes the Flood, very little happens - even an apparently dramatic, potentially disastrous incident produces nothing much in the way of an outcome. It is generally regarded as a nihilistic expression of indifference to whatever happens after one is gone, [2] though it may also express a more literal forecasting of ruination. A slightly odd one this, somewhat short in the plot department, but very nuanced, with more going on than meets the eye. He previously used it in The Idiot, as an epigraph for an article written by one of the characters of the novel.
