About this deal

Or it is because fundamentally we all are alike, which means all that glorified notion about the uniqueness of human beings does not stand true if we go to the very core of humanity.

Born in 1940, Annie Ernaux grew up in Normandy, studied at Rouen University, and later taught at secondary school. In Happening, a stirring account of the illegal abortion she had in Paris in the early Sixties, Ernaux realised the power one wields in writing true stories that involve others. Note: In my notes at one point in the book early on I made this comment, ‘can’t believe what I’m reading. In exchange he was given a place to sleep, free meals, some pocket money, and they did his laundry for him. There may be another perspective too, we keep on stacking repositories of memories throughout our life, with older ones getting diminished with time.babasını kaybettikten sonra onu anlatmak için bir romana başlaması ve bunu kesinlikle yapamaması, aynen ebeveyniyle mektuplaşır gibi dümdüz anlatmayı tercih etmesi bize ernaux’nun o muhteşem üslubunu kazandırmış. I think he was proud of Annie as she went through college, but apparently he was sort of jealous of her at times and she was ashamed of him at times.

Annie Ernaux: A Man’s Place review – an intimate portrait Annie Ernaux: A Man’s Place review – an intimate portrait

I waited there until they came to fetch me for my practical, which involved giving a lesson in front of an inspector and two assessors, both distinguished lecturers in French. Un confrontarsi che sta al di qua del pudore e che modera l'introspezione che indaga nel tessuto universale. The tone is flat and I think some readers might describe it as emotionless, but it is because of the tone that I see many emotions swirling. The author has been able to create the detached and objective narrative about her father as we have seen in A Woman’s Story but I did not enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the account of her mother’s life, perhaps something was missing in it, the depth of emotions is probably not as much as was in A Woman’s Story since somehow, we did not feel very connected, neither with her father nor with herself. It’s like reliving memories as you do with old suppressed memories, sometimes to re-imagine them, sometimes to get away with them. I don't know, it's an unspectacular story and style, at least in this translation, but also quietly moving.

For fifteen minutes he showered me with criticism, praise and advice, and I barely listened, wondering if all this meant I had passed. She observes her parents’ hard work and dedication to support their family with sympathetic snobbishness.

The next time I feel like whining about my lot in life I think I’ll just grab this book and read a few pages and that will set me straight. French author, Annie Ernaux, showed up on my bookish radar when she won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2022. This set in cities in North France where three quarters of the population work in the textile industry. In the few places where she mentions feelings or emotions, I imagine a flood of them, so much so that they finally poke through this very reserved writing style.
