May also be a function of what aperture as well, I suspect being stopped down would be part of the cause.

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f/4.0-5.6 Lens Review

Family moments are precious and sometimes you want to capture that time spent with loved ones or friends in better quality than your phone can manage. As for lens construction, the Olympus 40-150mm F4 Pro features 15 elements in 9 groups, including 2 ED lenses, 1 Super ED lens, and 1 HR lens.then took a second shot from the same position with the 40-150mm adjusted to deliver the same coverage at its maximum aperture of f2. This time set to S-AF mode with the light fading, but still bright enough to shoot wide open at 200 ISO with the stabilisation enabled. focal ratio on both lenses means they’ll share the same exposures, their relative depth-of-field is quite different, with the Olympus lens actually being equivalent to a 80-300mm f5.

The lens is also balanced on my camera and even fits nicely on the much smaller E-M5 range of cameras. Although this lens isn't supplied with a hood, it is quite resistant to flare and loss of contrast in contra-lit situations.

When applying the same technique in darker conditions with the 40-150, I think it may hunt and miss more than with the 75-300. In that role, I was part of a leadership team that took a party of around 25 young people to Namibia to help train new leaders there.

Subject that doesn't have good contrast (low light situations) and again the sharper lens loses the benefit, but then again it can offer the better separation if the subject has strong contrast but it is in low light situation. I often shoot surfers and when I do I try to keep the lens under 250mm because this would generally be a sharper shot than 300mm for the 50% or more crop I may have to do.Stopping the lens down just one stop results in visually uniform illumination throughout the zoom range. But, if the surf shots composition didn't require 50% cropping then 300mm would offer a sharp image.
