Although this is a middle-grade novel, I believe that it is something that YA readers and adults will love too, just like I did. Do you think you can settle off to sleep, Addie?’ asked Ruth. ‘Or would you like to read for a bit?’ He added: “When she was hurdling we said we couldn’t wait to go chasing, which was delayed by a couple of years because of injuries. She was thirsty now. Could she get a drink from the bathroom? She might wake Sunni if she got up. Or Ruth. Or Sam. She didn’t think Ruth would mind, but what about Sam? He’d been out working until late, Ruth said. He’d be very tired. People got angry when they were tired.Snow Leopardess was putting together a CV of her own – her race record included four wins, including a Listed bumper in Ireland and Newbury’s valuable Mares’ Final – when landing a valuable hurdle race at Auteuil in September 2017. But on her arrival from Paris the daughter of top National Hunt stallion Martaline had sustained a serious leg injury. Longdson is fully aware of the challenge that Snow Leopardess faces in creating a slice of history, but he is confident she will have no problems seeing out the extended four and a quarter mile trip.

I think we were always going to enter her. She seemed to love the fences and hopefully that will be the same in just over two weeks’ time. Addie looked over her shoulder. Penny was taking papers from her bag: papers about Addie. Papers for deciding things. Just let lovely Ruth and Sam look after you for a bit’ Penny, the social worker, encourages Addie. Yet Addie takes care of her Mam. That’s the way it’s meant to be. She didn’t mean to drop the milk bottle and alert the suspicions of the neighbours that Mam wasn’t coping again. Yet somehow, somebody found out and now Addie’s here, on an Exmoor farm, with lovely Ruth and Sam and Gabe, and Flo the sheepdog. There are other children, including Sunni, who doesn’t want Addie there, and Jake, who says nothing.Snow Leopardess might be the centre of attention at present but in time Longsdon hopes that her legacy will live on through her daughter Red Panda, who will join his team this summer. The bond between Addie and the foal I think was a beautiful one, and one that really resonated with me, as being an animal lover myself who has formed close bonds with them myself, I think the bond between a human and an animal is one of the most beautiful, significant bonds there is, yet also underrated of course. This poignant novel is beautifully written and explores the difficult issues of bullying, neglect and abuse with sensitivity. Rather than dwelling on why the children are in foster care, the tale offers insight into their emotions of rejection, confusion, anger and guilt. Despite the challenging subject matter, this is a positive tale, full of hope for a brighter future. I know everything’s strange for you, sweetheart,’ Ruth said, ‘but you must be so tired after today. You and Sunni get to know one another a bit. I’ll pop down for hot-water bottles. Then we’ll get you girls settled. OK?’
