All right," Drotte said reluctantly, and we stepped through, the volunteers following. Certain mysteries aver that the real world has been constructed by the human mind, since our ways are governed by the artificial categories into which we place essentially undifferentiated things, things weaker than our words for them. I understood the principle intuitively that night as I heard the last volunteer swing the gate closed behind us. Drotte was our captain, and Eata put an arm and a leg through the iron palings, but it was immediately clear that there was no hope of his getting his body to follow. Drotte moved away, and the rest of us stayed behind him. "Who are you, goodman? You're not soldiers." As they wander deep into the Jungle Garden, Severian hears a screaming “from some red world still unconquered by thought” and asks what it is. Agia believes it is a distant smilodon (saber-toothed cat), either far off in the garden or “perhaps the distance is of time.” Although she cannot explain it and says some things are unanswerable, the chambers appear open to the sky and are much larger on the inside than they appear at first. “I warned you that the rooms open out, and that you might find that disturbing. It is also said that the walls of these places are specula, whose reflective power creates the appearance of vast space.” The Shadow of the Torturer is a fantasy novel by American writer Gene Wolfe, published by Simon & Schuster in May 1980. [2] It is the first of four volumes in The Book of the New Sun [1] which Wolfe had completed in draft before The Shadow of the Torturer was published. It relates the story of Severian, an apprentice Seeker for Truth and Penitence (the guild of torturers), from his youth through his expulsion from the guild and subsequent journey out of his home city of Nessus.

As they cross the Lake of Birds, Hildegrin says that some call it that because many birds are found dead in the water. However he thinks it’s just because there are so many birds found at the Garden of Everlasting Sleep. He comments, “But she’s a good friend to birds, Death is. Wherever there’s dead men and quiet, you’ll find a good many birds, that’s been my experience.” Severian agrees, recalling the thrushes in the necropolis.Eat Brain for Memories: Eating an alzabo gland extract along with the flesh of a human, gives the partaker the memories of source of the flesh. To say that the world of Severian is grim is more than an understatement; it is unable to fully portray the stagnation and moral latitude the characters show. As befitting a torturer, Severian is strongly ambiguous morally, capable of both deep affection and lust but also uncaring with regards to violence. The character oscillates between merciful (for one character) and detached when executing another and there is very little in the way of brevity from the main character. Wolfe also takes his time despite the size of the novel in getting where he wants the character (and the audience) to go. There are no grand events in this narrative (another break from genre conventions). Instead, Wolfe relies on small events that culminate in substantial but subdued changes in the major character. In the beginning chapters of the book, Severian shows mercy and cares for a wounded wardog. This compassion builds up inside the character, leading to the event that would cause his expulsion from the only home the character has ever known among the torturers.
They enter the Garden of Endless Sleep which consists of a dark lake in an endless fen. Agia explains that the lake water can preserve corpses so they are weighted down with lead to reside there and their locations noted so they can found later. An old man paddling a skiff approaches and disputes this – although he has a marked diagram, he cannot locate the body of his wife. He further explains that the deadly averns were planted here by Father Inire to kill the manatees which came through the conduit. Agia is not interested and proceeds forward but Severian slowly walks along the shore in time with the old man’s paddling while the two converse. Greg Costikyan reviewed The Shadow of the Torturer and The Claw of the Conciliator in Ares magazine #9 and commented that "This is fantasy as it should be written; portentous events, marvelous beings, wielders of great powers, a land of terror and delight. If Wolfe never writes another word, he will have made his mark." [4] Severian laughs at this twisted logic and says he is not such a fool. Agia drops her gown and clasps Severian, declaring her love for him but then also reaching into his sabretache. Severian forcefully thrusts her away and her head strikes the wall; she slides down the wall weeping. He believes she was trying to steal the letter intended for the archon of Thrax but Agilus says she was after the coins in the sabretache. Severian leads her out into the hall and gives her a coin. Christianity is Catholic: Wolfe is Catholic and the religions existing in the world are based upon Catholicism. Domnina later vowed she would not go but a servant in a livery came for her the next day. When she returned hours later she was very upset. The servant had taken her down halls she did not know existed in the House Absolute, which alone was frightening. The presence chamber itself was a large room with solid red hangings and empty except for two vases taller than a man and several feet wide. “In the center was what she at first took to be a room within the room. The walls were octagonal and painted with labyrinths. Over it, just visible from where she stood at the entrance to the presence chamber burned the brightest lamp she had ever seen. It was blue-white, she said, and so brilliant an eagle could not have kept his eyes on it.” One of the eight walls painted with labyrinths opened and Father Inire stepped out. Behind him she saw a bottomless hole filled with light. He said, “You’ve come just in time. Child, the fish is nearly caught. You can watch the setting of the hook, and learn by what means his golden scales are to be meshed in our landing net.” He then led her into the octagonal enclosure.Drotte continued, "You must know that for certain simples to attain their highest virtues they must be pulled from grave soil by moonlight. It will frost soon and kill everything, but our masters require supplies for the winter. The three of them arranged for us to enter tonight, and I borrowed that lad from his father to help me." I looked down the street. Lanterns swung there among the fog-muffled sounds of feet and voices. I would have hidden, but Roche held me, saying, "Wait, I see pikes." By the time I reached the end, I had as many questions as when I’d started, but they were different questions. The world itself was fuller, its outlines more precise. The novel ends with Severian passing through another gate, listening to a tale being told by a stranger, and that tale being interrupted by an eruption of violence. But before we can discover what happened, the book ends: “Here I pause. If you wish to walk no farther with me, reader, I cannot blame you. It is no easy road.” What a curious place to end a book, I thought, even if it is a book in a series. Dueling Messiahs: Though it may not be apparent to the protagonist, there are two apparent candidates for the messiah figure known as the Conciliator, namely Baldanders and Serverian himself. Naturally they end up fighting - the trigger being the science-driven former destroying a relic belonging to the faith-driven latter. Fresh as a flower, Madame. Hardly a breath of stink on her, and nothing to worry about." More agilely than I would have thought possible, he sprang out. "Now give me one end and you take the other, Liege, and we'll have her out like a carrot."
