Within modern medicine, this definition is most commonly reflected in preventative health and chronic disease management. Gantz further defines this perspective with a discussion of the two parallel paradigms of self-care: a health care model that consists of the health care delivery systems and the lay model based in self-help groups, family practices, supplemental therapies, and the media [ 29]. Four levels of self-care performance have emerged: responsible, formally guided, independent, and abandoned [ 4]. Thus, the multidimensional concept of self-care reflects a fluid component to the overall care of a person.

But here is the main point to remember – self-care is not selfish and is something each one of us needs! Write about a time when you faced a difficult decision. Write about a time when you felt truly understood by someone. What did it feel like, and why was that experience important to you? Create a list of things that you usually enjoy doing, things that make you feel good.I recommend writing this list at a time when you’re feeling good so you can use it during times when you don’t feel so good. It can be as simple as: 100 things that make me feel good/happy! When have you felt misunderstood or invalidated? How can you communicate your feelings and needs in a way that helps others understand you better?

Along with using these writing prompts, there are many ways to be creative when journaling for self-care. Consider the following journaling ideas:

What is something that you're struggling with right now, and how can you show yourself kindness and compassion in this moment? Experiencing depression can make it hard to find the energy to look after yourself. But taking steps to look after your physical health can make a difference to how you feel: What's one thing you've been avoiding that you know you need to confront? How can you take the first step towards confronting it? This is more of a formal workbook based on cognitive behavioral therapy methods than a guided journal.One very powerful thing to do is to write about a time in your life when you felt proud of yourself or when you’ve felt confident. This type of journaling has helped me to overcome my fear of public speaking. Reflection and Self Knowledge Write about a time when you felt truly authentic and true to yourself. What did that feel like, and how can you cultivate that feeling in your daily life? And it’s not always that people expect from me but I just don’t feel comfortable saying anything other than “I’m okay” right now. My journal is the space where I am honest, rude, negative, hopeless, and above everything, true. Journaling is a great way to take care of yourself and your mental health, though it can be emotionally triggering at times. It takes inner strength to work through your emotions by journaling, so give yourself props for doing so!
