About this deal

Dremel deserves credits for incorporating variable speed options into this affordable entry-level scroll saw. You can easily control the cutting motions between 1500 and 2250 strokes per minute. Unfortunately, some components, such as a broken grub screw or drive linkage, may not be as reliable as I hoped. These issues could cause the saw to be unusable or underperform, requiring a replacement. Both pinned and plain-end blades are compatible with the Sealey SM1302, able to make a maximum cut depth of 50mm. Blade type: There are two main types of blades, pin-end and plain-end. I prefer plain-end blades because they’re easier to find and provide more versatility when cutting intricate patterns. However, pin-end blades can be just as effective for some applications.

Double parallel link arms are a newer design for scroll saws. They feature two parallel arms which move at the tip to reduce vibration to a minimum. This style is usually more expensive. c. C-Type Link Arm

This scroll saw has two functions. Primarily, it can be used as an automatic scroll saw that can lay flat on a workbench. However, the saw section can also be detached and turned into a handheld fret saw. This gives you more flexibility in your tools. Recently, I got my hands on the Neilsen 75W Mini Scroll Saw and put it to the test. With a 1000-4500spm no-load speed and adjustable cutting angle, I was able to achieve precise and intricate cuts on various woodworking projects. The 75W motor provided enough power for most tasks, while the cutting capacity of 12mm for wood and 3mm for metal proved suitable for my needs. While other power saws usually have round blades to make straight cuts through wood pieces, scroll saws are the go-to choice when you need to make bevelled edges, intarsia, wooden figurines, and puzzle pieces.

Just as the name suggests, this link arm mimics the shape of the letter “C” with a single pivot point at one end. This style of link arm has a slight arc to its movement, so it’s prone to undercutting edges. On the other hand, it’s considered to have a more aggressive cut than other types. Plain-end blades, however, require a tool to loosen and tighten the clamps when you need to change them.

One critical aspect to pay attention to when purchasing a scroll saw is the quality and durability of its materials. A sturdy and well-built frame will ensure that the saw will not only last longer but also provide smooth and accurate cuts. Additionally, take note of the throat capacity, which refers to the distance between the blade and the rear frame of the saw. The throat capacity determines the maximum width of a piece of wood that can be cut using the scroll saw, and for bigger projects, having a larger capacity becomes crucial. Also, lubricate the blade before making the cut and don’t remove the protective cover from the plastic before it’s cut. Are the arms of a scroll saw always parallel? The number of up-and-down strokes a scroll saw can complete in a minute is another factor to take into account. Measured in strokes per minute (spm), this speed can range from 400 spm in cheaper models to 1,800 spm in higher-end scroll saws.

When choosing the best scroll saw, I keep several key features in mind to ensure that I get the perfect tool for my projects. These features include:If you want a multi-purpose scroll saw that can be used either on a workbench or by hand, the Dremel MS20 2-in-1 Scroll Saw is a solid choice. The Proxxon Micromot is a superior quality scroll saw that is ideal if you are into carpentry, toy making or model building. It does not have to be mounted prior to use, meaning you do not need a dedicated space in which to use it. Changing plain blades was somewhat challenging, and the included instructions were not particularly helpful, relying on unclear photos rather than clear descriptions. I had to remove the side panel to adjust the plain blades, which added time to the blade-changing process.
