About this deal

Who’d have bet, fifteen years after the release of Rise of the Footsolider, there would be a cinema release for a fifth film in the franchise...

My5

The movie says it gives the spectator an inside view of the British criminal underclass, more in particular the Essex underclass. Football-hooligans, steroids, cocaine, heroine and violence, lots and lots of violence. Violence resulting from paranoia and fear in general. In this movie no-one seems to use his (or her) brain, we're looking at a bunch of animals in clothes. Like I said, there is not much of a plot and the storytelling leaves a lot to be desired. Rise of the Footsoldier: Vengeance - Box Office Mojo". Box Office Mojo . Retrieved 21 October 2023. I was actually really happy with the original cut of the 2007 cut of Rise of the Footsoldier. I would never call this edition the director’s cut because I was happy with the cut at the time. I wasn’t forced by anybody, Optimum or Carnaby, to cut the original down..” Winners at the 6th annual National Film Awards UK 2021". National Film Awards . Based on the true story of the brutal Rettendon triple murders in 1995, Rise Of The Footsoldier introduced viewers to the cut throat world of Essex organised crime. Now 5 years since it's release revisit the terraces of the east end with the new Limited Extreme Extended Edition Steelbook, featuring over 20 minutes of all new extreme footage and an all new commentary and interview with visionary Director Julian Gilbey. One of the most interesting is the new commentary done for the cut with Julian Gilbey and Terry Stone which gives an insight into what has changed between versions and lots of reminiscing of the making of the film. For people interested into film making Gilbey talks quite in depth about how he re-edited the new cut to improve the action scenes.

RISE OF THE FOOTSOLDIER II was one of the most eagerly awaited British Gangster film sequels in years, it’s more grown up and certainly much darker than the first film, visually it looks stunning and lovers of the British Gangster film genre will love it.

Retrieved 19 September 2023. If I was to say that Rise of the Footsoldieris quite an obnoxious film it would probably sound negative but in truth it’s not. Especially in this Extreme Extended Edition we are given a version of events that is high on the violence quota, high on the drugs and high on the sex. Watching the interview with director and co-writer Julian Gilbey you understand that this was the point he was trying to bring across though, that we see the events from the perspective of people who weren’t nice, these are not anti-heroes, they are often psychotic, violent and many times their actions are fuelled by heavy drug use in the form of not only the likes of cocaine but steroids. It’s an in your face style where these people don’t care what anybody thinks of them they take what they want and if they don’t get it people will end up either badly beaten or dead. The very nature of the story makes it believable that this was what led to the violence that befell the Essex Boys in the end, as the saying goes “you reap what you sow”. It should be noted of course that this is only one interpretation of the events, it is in the end a fictional account. I think that the perfect cut of the Rise of the Footsoldier is probably I would say 2/3 the new cut, 1/3 the old cut. The truth of the matter is that there isn’t a perfect cut of it. Because it’s not perfect film but I celibate it for it’s imperfections..” This movie could have been great. It is not in my opinion. The storyline is fragmented, the editor appears not to be able to choose between a Guy Ritchie-style of storytelling and a more straightforward one. There is a great emphasis on excessive violence, including torture. Too much so if you ask me. The characters are very shallow and stereo-typed, I would have liked to see more depth there. It is hard to identify with the main character. As a result the movie remains shallow as a whole.

Rise of the Footsoldier Limited Extreme Extended Edition

As of now, it is has not been confirmed whether Vengeance is intended to be the final film in the series.Rise of the Footsoldier is a film that I always find to be hit and miss, it does fit into that typical British Gangster movie genre and has a story to tell which is both interesting and entertaining, if also disturbing. As Julian Gilbey says in his interview included in the special features it’s not a film for everybody but it’s one that does have its role to play in both his filmography and the genre it’s based in. I will admit to liking it, but especially in this extreme edition it does rely on violence a little too much which damages its impact to some degree, the characters can be a little bit too one dimensional at times and as mentioned this tends to make scenes less effective. If anything it can still sit with the likes of The Football Factory and Essex Boys as a more gritty style of gangster/hooliganism film and arguably one of the better ones.
