About this deal

From Nant y Moch reservoir the river flows through the village of Ponterwyd, before rushing into a steep sided gorge clad in ancient Welsh oak woodland, plunging over the beautiful Gyfarllwyd Falls, which you can see through the trees from Devil's Bridge. A standard gauge railway in the Rheidol valley to the east of Aberystwyth was planned as part of the Manchester and Milford Railway route from Llanidloes to Strata Florida via Devil's Bridge. [3]Also planned was a branch from this line from Devil's Bridge to Aberystwyth to carry timber (for pit props in the South Wales valleys) and lead ore from the Rheidol Valley to the sea and the main line railway at Aberystwyth. Many lead mines in the Rheidol valley were producing ore at the end of the 19th century, but did not have a means of transporting large quantities of ore to the harbour in Aberystwyth. The Rheidol power plant is the largest of its kind in England and Wales and has generated renewable energy since 1962.

Between Devil's Bridge and Aberystwyth runs a narrow-gauge steam railway - the Vale of Rheidol Railway built originally to ship metal ore from the mines. Nowdays it is a popular tourist route into the top end of the Rheidol Valley. The Valley is also home to the Cwm Rhiedol Hydro-electric scheme which has an excellant Visitor Centre with an exhibition and cafe. Other popular activities in the Rheidol Valley include fishing, cycling and walking. The Rheidol hydropower plant is the largest of its kind in England and Wales. Since 1962, the scheme has generated renewable energy by using the rainwater that falls on the surrounding mountains. The control room at the Rheidol hydropower plant also monitors the operations of Statkraft’s onshore wind farms in the UK. The 11.75 mile journey takes approximately one hour in each direction. Listen to the sound of a powerful narrow-gauge steam locomotive working to climb up 700ft (200m) from Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge. Dinas Reservoir and Nantymoch Reservoir provide an excellant angling experience. Both lakes are bank fishing only. Nantymoch is fly only but on Dinas spinning and worming are also allowed. In 2014 the line received its first visiting locomotive since the 1980s, when Palmerston returned from the Ffestiniog Railway for the first time since its original periods of hire around the First World War, and in 2015 the line held its first ever enthusiast-orientated gala event. The river descends one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Wales at Pontarfynach (Devil's Bridge). Below these waterfalls, the river passes the abandoned workings of the Cwm Rheidol lead mine. The remainder of the meandering course of the river is through an ever-widening valley before reaching the sea at Aberystwyth. By the time the railway was ready to open in 1902, lead mining in Ceredigion was in steep decline. However a significant growth in tourism was under way, and the carriage of passengers soon became the principal traffic of the railway. It opened for mineral traffic in August 1902 and for passengers on 22 December 1902, [5] using two 2-6-2T locomotives built by Davies and Metcalfe and the aforementioned Rheidol, built by Bagnall.
