About this deal

Q. How do I use the HDMI port? A. With the unit powered off, plug the device into your HDMI TV or monitor. Then power the device on.

The TF1 slot contains the SD card for your Linux OS. To replace this card, you’ll need to flash one of the Linux operating systems onto this new card. For this, you can use a smaller SD card of 8GB or so as it will only be used for the OS going forward. See my guide for Installing Custom Firmware (CFW) on the RG353 You’ll want make sure that you have a second SD card where you will load up all of your ROMs. This is not required but I highly recommend it. Insert your blank SD card into the device in the TF2 slot and format the card as external storage. The next thing I did was restart the system into the Linux OS and have it configure the SD card with the Linux file structure. This makes it easier to use a single card for both OS. You can see more on this in my Starter’s Guide for the RG353 Audio from video snapshots and video screensaver does not play when bluetooth audio is connected. Resolved as of 01/03/2023 update. Depending on your firmware choice, everything mostly “just works” out of the box. Many CFWs come pre-configured with the best settings for each emulator Regarding the screen, RG353V bears a similar 640*480, 3.5-inch touchscreen display as the RG353P but unlike most Anbernic devices, it does not feature the company’s logo under the screen. This gives the device a sleeker and more minimalist look that’s quite appealing. The bezels are also relatively thin which is a welcome feature of the device.

This process will NOT copy any of your roms, games and saves from the main SD card to the secondary card. It will just create the structure for you. You'll need to copy those yourself. You can use File Manager from the Options menu to do this or copy them manually from your computer. This distribution is very close to JELOS in terms of emulators being configurable and being lightweight, however, as custom development continues separately from the original OS you can expect it to start to diverge more.

Other, newer systems are also available to emulate such as PSP and DS but the performance is title dependent. For PSP emulation, I got Tekken 6 and GTA Vice City Stories running at 60fps and 30 fps respectively. However, the screen size of the RG353V is rather restrictive, especially for DS emulation on DraStic. Anbernic’s signature build quality is predictably on offer here, with high quality plastics and responsive controls. This OS does not come pre-installed with Google Play store so you’ll either have to sideload your apps, use a third-party app like the Aurora Store, or follow a walkthrough on installing the Google Play store onto the device. Unlike the RG353VS, the RG353V model has the perk of being a dual-boot system as it also runs Android 11. This means you can essentially use the console as a (very) mini tablet of sorts to browse the net or use social media while navigating with its touchscreen. But that’s not the only features that the Android system enables as you’ll also have the Android emulators accessible, in particular AetherSX2 for PS2 emulation. However, don’t expect much with the RK3566 as PS2 performance will be heavily title-dependent. I got Shadow of the Colossus running at 14fps with stuttering audio and wouldn’t recommend this device solely for PS2 emulation.Assuming you’ve configured your TF2 SD card properly for games and all of the files are in the right folders, your Linux OS of choice should automatically read them from the card and present you with a series of menu options including one for each game system as well as one for Favorites and one for Tools or Options. The device has a 3.5″ 640*480 IPS display as is the norm for these mid-tier handhelds. Whether there is much difference in colour temperature between the touch/non-touch versions remains to be seen. The android OS on the RG353 can provide a great experience but it will require some work to get it setup. If you plan on playing PSP or N64 on this device then I definitely recommend putting in the effort as the Android side is more capable for these systems and will give you better performance. I was using Paragon software to add, remove, or modify files on the SD card and now my unit won't boot with the card. What could be wrong?

Existing roms folders, roms, bios, and games on this sd card will NOT be overwritten during this process. I stumbled upon a review on YouTube, had a look and wanted to have it. Now, after a while with it, I can say: I love it. I find it intriguing, what devices can be built at what price nowadays. I especially like the screen and the buttons, which have a good quality-feel for me. On the top of the RG353M are shoulder and trigger buttons. There is a 3.5mm headphone port, USB Type-C port for connecting peripherals to, a Mini HDMI port for connecting to a TV or monitor, a second USB Type-C port which is used for charging and a Function button which is used to bring up the in-game menu. RG353M Top View Based on the specs, the RG353V could be seen as essentially a vertically oriented RG353P. However, there are additional differences beyond the form factor. Its look is instantly reminiscent of the GameBoy and the colours of the A/B/X/Y buttons and body further adds a nostalgic appeal (SNES-styled in the case of the reviewed unit). Q. Can the mouse pointer that's always visible in the upper right corner of Drastic (NDS Emulator) be removed? A. As of the writing of this entry (11/10/2020), it can not be removed. It’s unfortunately a "feature" of the emulator for the time being. Resolved as of the 1/28/2021 update. Q. My unit doesn't seem to boot from the SD card anymore. What could be the issue? A. It could be one of the following issues:It’s a Gameboy Color! Wait, no it’s not, I don’t remember my childhood GBC having quite this many buttons. Well, at least this time around it’s not so weird when your grandmother calls it your “Nintendo” because it does look a lot like the famed 1998 handheld, especially in this faux-Atomic Purple. Another great firmware is UnofficialOS. This OS originally started as a compiled distribution of the JELOS firmware after the JELOS team stopped providing compiled images. It has now morphed into it’s own fork of the JELOS firmware with it’s own custom development making it a separate OS.

Swipe down twice from the top to fully open the shade then select the gear icon in the right corner of the shade. I see this device as a positive step for Anbernic’s vertical line of handhelds, smartly evolving from the 351V and becoming a better product as a result. The flaws are handily outweighed by a device that provides an excellent Linux mode, a Nintendo-grade build quality, and a form factor and look that is nostalgic and dare I say cute? I dare say. I loved my time with this device during the course of reviewing it and I intend to make it one of my daily drivers, particularly for the 8-bit and 16-bit games that make the most of the iconic appearance it mimics.Comparing these results with the RG353P and RG353V models, we can see they are all performing roughly the same as each other. However the M model does have the overall highest scores out of the RG353 range. Linux OS Let’s start with the meat and potatoes of any retro gaming inputs, the face buttons and the dpad. A large majority of your library prior to the 5th generation consoles (N64, PSX, Saturn) will use these as their primary inputs, so it’s important that they get done right, and this is where Anbernic traditionally shines. This device will carry on this tradition, with a large responsive dpad, and decently large (for a handheld) face buttons with just the right amount of travel and resistance, all utilizing a rubber membrane interface that Anbernic has clearly mastered at this point.
