Pauline Oliveros' life as a composer, performer and humanitarian was about opening her own and others' sensibilities to the universe and facets of sounds. Her career spanned fifty years of boundary dissolving music making. In the '50s she was part of a circle of iconoclastic composers, artists, poets gathered together in San Francisco. In the 1960's she influenced American music profoundly through her work with improvisation, meditation, electronic music, myth and ritual. Verma, T. S., Levine, S. N., & Meng, T. H. Transient modeling synthesis: A flexible analysis/synthesis tool for transient signals. In Proceedings of the International Computer Music Conference (pp. 48–51) (1997).Oliveros thought a lot about the distinction between hearing and listening. Hearing, she writes, ‘represents the primary sense organ – hearing happens involuntarily’. But listening is voluntary. ‘All cultures develop through ways of listening.’ Some thoughts are dreamier. ‘What would you want to hear if you had a bionic ear that could let you listen to anything, anywhere, any time?’ she wonders. ‘Would you like to zoom into a waterfall to hear individual sounds of the falling drops?’ Oliveros – caught in rapt attention – appears to be almost, unwittingly, describing a fatal level of abstraction. Deep Listening is my life practice," Oliveros explained, simply. Oliveros founded Deep Listening Institute, formerly Pauline Oliveros Foundation, now the Center For Deep Listening at Rensselaer, Troy, NY. Her creative work is currently disseminated through The Pauline Oliveros Trust and the Ministry of Maåt, Inc at PoP+MoM Publications. anchor.fm/quantum-ai-institute/episodes/Quantum-AI-Series-Dr--Hans-Melo--CEO--Menten-AI---Exclusive-Interview-by-Mava-Ghonda-e1c8gru Hear the latest news about everything from quantum computers to astrophysics, all straight from scientists at the University of Maryland. QUANTUM LISTENING by Pauline Oliveros - Good Press

In response to the anti-war movements of the 1960s, pioneering musician and composer Pauline Oliveros began to expand the way she made music, experimenting with meditation, movement and activism in her compositions. Fascinated by the role that sound and consciousness play in our daily lives, Oliveros developed a series of Sonic Meditations that would eventually lead to the creation of Deep Listening – a practice for healing and transformation open to all. Oliveros was Distinguished Research Professor of Music at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, and Darius Milhaud Artist-in-Residence at Mills College. She founded "Deep Listening ®," which came from her childhood fascination with sounds and from her works in concert music with composition, improvisation and electro-acoustics. She described Deep Listening as a way of listening in every possible way to everything possible to hear no matter what you are doing. Such intense listening includes the sounds of daily life, of nature, of one's own thoughts as well as musical sounds. When speaking, I try to remind myself to listen from the heart space without expecting to convince or dominate a conversation. Sitting with what’s uncomfortable and detaching from an outcome invites possibilities to arise from the quantum field and a willingness to explore new opportunities. As an executive coach who works with leaders, I’m demonstrating a readiness to take in what’s ready to emerge from a space of mutual and emergent wisdom. It’s edgy inquiry considering ideas from the fringe of not knowing, what’s messy and possible chaos. Honoring my voice and the voices of others, I lose attachment to ritualistic rule-bound thinking and pre-determined outcomes. von Helmholtz, H. (1870). After Silence: Improvised Music, Listening and Environmental Sound. Other Thesis, University of the Arts London Letting go of a need to be right and genuine listening takes focus, concentration and is definitely work. The purpose of dialogue reminds us that listening for understanding is an exchange of ideas whose purpose is obtaining insights unavailable in the beginning. Being fully present is autumn listening; we learn to trust, let go of agendas and our attachments to them. When I do, l appreciate why someone supports or opposes an idea or position. I begin listening for commitment; my own and the other person’s perspective taking and meaning making. Her holistic approach to making music is a testament to the generative powers of listening, noticing, improvisation and responding to what is already here rather than seeking to overwrite it. Her work doesn’t shut out the world; it remains thoroughly connected to it.’ Claire-Louise Bennett Dypdykk I Musikkhistorien - Del 30: Kvinner I Eksperimentell Musikk (14.09.2020 - TFB) Oppdatert 25.09.2020The key to multi-level existence is Deep Listening – listening in as many ways as possible to everything that can possibly be heard all of the time. Deep Listening is exploring the relationships among any and all sounds whether natural or technological, intended or unintended, real, remembered or imaginary. Thought is included.
