About this deal

Emma Wilmot, consultant diabetologist, University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust said: “Integrating innovative technology as a routine part of diabetes care is an important step to improve diabetes care. Novo Nordisk’s smart connected pens are an example of how technology can support people living with diabetes to gain greater insight into the management of their diabetes, on their journey to becoming experts in their diabetes. In my clinic, the opportunity to view daily insulin data will allow me to better support the individual with diabetes to achieve their goals. It will allow for more tailored and informed advice on optimisation of glucose levels, with the ultimate goal of improving future outcomes.”

Dr Griffin adds that he is also now seeing the benefits of device connectivity in clinics. “The rich data has allowed me to have more meaningful consultations that are beneficial for the person living with type 1 diabetes and their families. When your pancreas is working properly it makes small amounts of insulin all the time and releases more insulin when your blood glucose levels increase after eating. When you have diabetes, your body does not make enough insulin or the insulin it makes does not work properly. Diabetes Novo Nordisk NovoPen NovoPen Ech NovoPen ® 6 and NovoPen Echo ® Plus smart insulin pens collect dose data and time and date of dose to better inform the management of diabetes alongside blood glucose monitoring. Reusable Novo Nordisk smart insulin pens will launch first, followed by a Bluetooth attachment for disposable pens later in 2019. Partners include Roche/mySugr, Dexcom, and Glooko

A further analysis looking at missed bolus doses (insulin that is specifically taken at mealtimes) indicated that NovoPen® 6 decreased the average daily number of missed doses by 43% (p=0.002) by the end of the study. Pinder Sahota, general manager, Novo Nordisk UK, said: “We believe digital innovation of devices and treatments has the potential to transform people’s lives and help alleviate the daily burden of living with diabetes. Our smart connected insulin pens aim to empower people to better understand their diabetes management, have more informed conversations with their doctor and ultimately improve their blood glucose control.” We’ve seen big strides in the development of insulin pump technology in recent years, and now evolving smart insulin pen technology is showing how these devices can make life a little easier for people who use multiple daily injections. For me, the best thing was that it became a safety net in terms of knowing when I last injected insulin. Before insulin pump therapy I had injected over 15,000 times during 10 years with type 1 diabetes and there were times when I would ask myself 'did I give my insulin?'. NovoPens provided me with that answer, which helped to keep me safe.”

Tom began using the Libre sensor alongside smart insulin pens in February 2022. He admits that prior to FreeStyle LibreLink connectivity being made available with the pens, using Glooko to link up the smart pen alongside LibreLink for sensor readings was useful, but also a challenge. This was because he had to navigate multiple apps at the same time. But he says the FreeStyle LibreLink integration of smart insulin pens is a ‘massive improvement’. I have been using an insulin pump for just over six months now, but before then I was using Novo smart pens. I would use the Echo Plus for my rapid-acting insulin injections, and the NovoPen 6 for my long-acting insulin. We spoke to two members of the diabetes community to understand their experiences with smart insulin pens and explore the impact that widespread use of these pens could have on diabetes teams as well as people with diabetes. What is a smart insulin pen?Glooko: In January 2017,Novo Nordisk and Glooko announced a partnershipto develop digital diabetes tools together. Since that time, they have launched the Cornerstones4Care app, and the two will continue to work together as Novo Nordisk brings its connected insulin pens to market. Earlier this year, Glooko received FDA clearance for a basal insulin dosing advice app, and we hope to see that come to market at some point. It will allow for more tailored and informed advice on optimisation of glucose levels, with the ultimate goal of improving future outcomes.” James Ridgeway, 34, is a diabetes specialist nurse (DSN) with type 1 diabetes who has seen both the personal and professional side of using smart insulin pens. Emma Wilmot, Consultant Diabetologist, University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust said:“Integrating innovative technology as a routine part of diabetes care is an important step to improve diabetes care. Insulin is a hormone made in your pancreas, which is a gland behind the stomach. It helps your body use glucose (sugar) for energy.

This data can be uploaded to a compatible app and viewed by people living with diabetes and their healthcare professionals. Novo Nordisk believes that digital health solutions such as smart insulin pens will help close the gap between the potential of modern diabetes medicines and the reality that most people struggle to use them to their best effect. Manually logging data is time consuming. It typically did not show the exact time that insulin was administered, for example, before or after a meal was consumed. Smart connected devices reduce this time spent logging and provide more precise data.” Results from an observational study indicate that using NovoPen 6 to administer their insulin could give people living with type 1 diabetes close to two extra hours of improved glucose levels (measured as HbA 1c 3.9 – 10.0 mmol/L) per day, with a reduction in time spent in hyperglycaemia (measured as HbA 1c >10 mmol/L) and level 2 hypoglycaemia (measured as HbA 1c <3.0 mmol/L). A further analysis looking at missed bolus doses (insulin that is specifically taken at mealtimes) indicated that NovoPen 6 decreased the average daily number of missed doses by 43% (p=0.002) by the end of the study.Beyond reusable pens, which are more popular outside the US, Novo Nordisk also announced that connectivity for disposable pens is coming “later in 2019.” This feature will capture insulin doses through a Bluetooth-enabled smart device that is attached to the widely used disposable FlexTouch pen. The attachment will transmit the insulin dose, time of dose, and the type of insulin being injected to a phone app (an important safety precaution to avoid mix-ups). Novo Nordisk has not shared any pictures, so we’re not sure if it will include a screen and what apps it will communicate with. Still, it is exciting that Novo Nordisk will have smart connectivity for both reusable and disposable insulin pens! New Partnerships
