This is the first flat gaming monitor Samsung has produced using Mini-LED technology, with its smaller LEDs theoretically meaning improved contrast and clarity – helped further by 360 separate dimming zones. There's also a matte finish to reduce glare which we like. The other specs you'll want to know about are the 144Hz maximum refresh rate, the High Dynamic Range (VESA Display HDR600), AMD FreeSync Premium Pro support, and the 1 ms (MPRT) response time. A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms (MPRT) response time allow a swift, smooth response and enable precise mouse movements. Even during the most intense moments, the Odyssey Neo G7 keeps extremely smooth and fast action gameplay and reduces stuttering, input latency and screen tearing through AMD FreeSync Premium Pro support. The gulf in audio quality was immediately clear when swapping between the monitor and my Razer Nommo speakers. When paying this much for a gaming monitor, you won’t want to settle for the substandard integrated speakers. Either invest in some speakers or don a pair of headphones. Image qualityAdditionally the Matte Display reduces light reflection on the screen, minimizing distractions during the most intense gaming sessions and letting the large screen deliver details while keeping the player focused on the game and the stunning visual performance. Differences in brightness and darkness are particularly well handled, and there's very little in the way of ghosting or trails that we could notice in games such as Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 running on a Windows PC. We didn't test the monitor with a top-tier console like the PlayStation 5 or the Xbox Series X, but performance levels should be similar. That's not to say it's a bad monitor for working on documents. Not at all – but Samsung has clearly prioritised gaming here, and that should play into your decision. With its 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160 pixels), 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, and typical 400 nits of brightness, it shows off games really well, and that extends to videos from the web or played over streaming apps too. It can cater for TV viewing too, so for some you'll want to consider this almost as a 43-inch gaming TV alternative, marrying the best of both worlds into one desktop solution. Instead, the Neo G7 could replace your TV in the living room, or even make a nice bedroom TV substitute if you fancy gaming from the comfort of your bed. The bright side of having such a large display is a more absorbing picture, making the mountainscape of Horizon Zero Dawn even more picturesque. In what probably won’t come as a surprise, the Samsung Odyssey Neo G7 is one of the heaviest monitors I’ve ever used, hitting the scales at 9.2kg without the stand. I was still able to carry it to and from my desk with relative ease, but it’s certainly going to be a hassle if you ever move home.
