Attention Whore: What Lloyd Figg, with all his Ax-Crazy antics (though no doubt a troubled kid with serious issues 'upstairs') likely turned out to be. As Derf wasn't in the house to overhear them, Jeff's final interaction with his mother is entirely conjectural. Most of his classmates, when they thought about him at all, considered him weird, but another student was regarded as the "class psycho." It's about deconstructing darkness and tracing the origins of destructive personalities. Dahmer as a teen wasn't so different from kids we all knew in high school. As a youth services librarian, I read a lot of books for and about teens. And a lot of them (perhaps especially the ones I gravitate to) are about outsiders. Dahmer could have been just another outsider kid - one with a messed up family, one with repressed sexuality, one who made jokes out of things that are not funny. Exploring his history helps me to think about how I can influence teens for the good. About how I can influence humanity for the good. And how close we all are to the darkness. To letting our own destructive tendancies to go too far. That is why when I first heard about this graphic novel a few years ago I decided not to read it, I thought it too dark for me.

Villain with Good Publicity: Downplayed. Derf remembered Jeff as being someone who was "off". Still, his behavior was seen as mostly humorous by his classmates.

Derf couldn't remember what the walls, carpets, and furnishings in the Dahmer house looked like, so everything inside is based on the general fashions of the time period. From Nobody to Nightmare: The book explores the early process for Jeff, as well as how every adult who could have taken him off that path didn't. The novel depicts the author's teenage friendship with Jeffrey Dahmer, who later became an infamous serial killer, during his time at Eastview Junior High and Revere High School. The story follows Dahmer from age 12 up to, but not including, his first murder, two weeks after high school graduation. Tragic Keepsake: Almost all of Derf's sketches from high school show cameos of Jeff as a humorous character. He becomes the mascot for a fictitious candidate for class president and appears in the inner cover art for Revere High's 1978 yearbook, with all of the characters surrounding him speaking in "Dahmerisms." (Jeff would have been on the cover proper if the yearbook committee hadn't spiked it.) The book also shows a photo of Jeff joking around ◊ at school.

Narration: Dahmer lived in rural Bath, Ohio, in the rolling countryside just outside grimy, crumbling, Akron. The Rubber City was an industrial powerhouse gone bust in the great Seventies recession. Times were tough. The tire factories were closing. Once bustling, Downtown Akron was now a ghost town of boarded-up stores. People were leaving the area in droves. Akron was dying. After Derf's standup routine as Hitler, he goes to get some water and runs into Dahmer, having a brief chat with him. Derf makes a note that yes, he did indeed have a conversation with Jeffrey Dahmer while dressed as Adolf Hitler and that in hindsight it's one of the most surreal moments of his life.Young Jeffrey Dahmer". Aside from missing this opportunity in his book, it is a fascinating and sad story. It certainly made me think about my own cruelties to others, while reminding the reader you never ever know how much small kindnesses may mean to another person. It also touches on the nature/nurture question, as Dahmer's mother had problems during her pregnancy with him, and the household, while forlorn, was certainly something many many other kids have weathered better than Dahmer did.First of all the title of this book is misleading. It’s not a comic about being close friend of Dahmer. Author was just a classmate, a person that saw meek, socially inept & quiet Dahmer in passing from hallways to his class. It’s not some close insight on how Dahmer would display himself in front of a person he would trust. So it promises something in a title that it doesn’t deliver. Well that’s a bummer. Disappeared Dad: Despite doing his best to get his son less introverted and more interested in doing things, Jeff's father Lionel frequently makes himself absent to escape his volatile marriage to Joyce. Like all the other adults in his life, he is not there when Jeff needs him most and thus completely misses the warning signs of his evolving pathology. However, I went to the movie theater recently and they showed a preview about a movie based on this graphic novel. The trailer is why I decided to read this book Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Double-Subversion in Jeff. On one hand, he does become one of the grisliest serial killers in modern history. However, he's presented somewhat semi-sympathetically (at first) in the comic and comes off more as a Reluctant Psycho than a gleeful sadist. My Friend Dahmer is about Jeffrey Dahmer’s life before he began having his “dates over for dinner.” It tells of a sad, neglected, not-ever-quite-right kind of boy whose problems were ignored by his family, classmates, and teachers alike . . .
