The one-card draw, two 4-card layouts, The Modern Witch Tarot arrives in a beautiful, slide to open box featuring cover artwork from ‘The Magician’ card. Intricate magical symbols are printed inside both the cover and sleeve of the box, in which sits the cards and an incredibly cute little guidebook. The Guidebook The Hierophant is traditionally depicted by a male character in a Christian religious role. And while this version deviates with a female Hierophant key symbolic images remain: Impressive high-quality printing. This sort of artwork is intolerant of printing faults, so the quality control is excellent. The pictures feature clean lines and solid, non-bleeding colors.

The bonus card Everything Is Fine is similar to the 10 of Swords, so its title probably says it all. It may replace the 10 of Swords. Each card of the Minor Arcana is illustrated and closely mirrors the representations in the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot, but of course with its own modern twist. The symbol for the minor arcana suits looks very familiar, but the illustrated scenes are fun to explore.

While witchcraft is a relatively prominent part of the culture of the US, and steeped into the energy of Mexico, it takes a different tone in Japan, where the majority of the population is polytheist. While the wording of both the descriptions and the interpretations is modern, the divinatory meanings are not radically different to traditional meanings so much as updated and appropriate to 21st-century living. I lovethe depiction of the Six of Wands, too. This card is all about victory, success, and achievement and depicts a woman on a horse wearing a leopard print coat and ripped jeans. In her ear is a V earring, reflecting the card’s message. I love this touch and how it represents the meaning of the card. From the way the box is put together and designed, it’s clear that a lot of thought went into making this product. There’s even a piece of cardboard inside the box to keep the cards in place. I love how Lisa has combined tradition with diversity and fashion to create unique, colourful, bold, ‘badass’ cards ideal for modern, innovative and inspirational readings. She employs Waite-Smith imagery that has been modernized to fit 21st century reality. While some may regard it as comic book art, the pictures don’t have the monotonous uniformity of comics; each figure is distinctive, with minute elements characterizing their look and emotion.
