About this deal

Autistic people have difficulties with interpreting both verbal and non-verbal language like gestures or tone of voice. Some autistic people are unable to speak or have limited speech whileother autistic people have very good language skills but struggle to understand sarcasm or tone of voice. Other challenges include: Statistics appear to show that more men and boys than women and girls have a diagnosis of autism. The study most quoted, written by Leo Kanner in 1943, found there were four times as many boys as girls. In later years various studies, together with anecdotal evidence, put the men to women ratio at anything from 2:1 to 16:1.

Some autistic people have a learning disability. This means they may find it hard to look after themselves and need help with daily life. Autistic people may have other conditions Some autistic people need little or no support. Others may need help from a parent or carer every day. Some people use other names for autism Does your child understand when you tell him or her to do something? ( For Example, if you don't point, can your child understand “put the book on the chair” or “bring me the blanket”?) Answer 18Government prevalence surveys last estimated that around one in 100 people are autistic. However, because these are estimates this is not definite. Other surveys and international estimates have come up with different prevalence estimates. Most of them suggest autism prevalence is higher. The National Autistic Society thinks the UK governments should do more research into autism prevalence to find an updated figure. Until that research is done, we believe that more thanone in 100 people are autistic, which means more than 700,000 people in the UK. I was diagnosed 2 years ago at age 41. The main voice in this book is teenage "M" who shares her story with autism, being a teenager and wanting to be "normal". A very brief book (which I read cover to cover in 35 minutes) which gives a glimpse into the life of an autistic girl and how she copes with day to day life and the things which us NT people take for granted. Does your child try to get you to watch him or her? ( For Example, does your child look at you for praise, or say “look” or “watch me”?) Answer 17

The Limpsfield girls certainly found their voice and it has all the urgency, immediacy and sheer vibrancy of teenage life... I hope that M's journey will help girls with autism making that same journey through their early teen years to find themselves and believe in themselves as well as help others understand and believe in them. If you turn your head to look at something, does your child look around to see what you are looking at? Answer 16 Does your child get upset by everyday noises? ( For Example, does your child scream or cry to noise such as a vacuum cleaner or loud music?)

But Sarah Wild, head of Limpsfield Grange, believes there are just as many girls with autism as there are boys. Resists cuddling and holding, and seems to prefer playing alone, retreating into his or her own world I am so thrilled to see these amazing girls speaking out and sharing their stories. It's heart-warming, funny, sad at times and educational. It's a short read but carries a powerful message.
