About this deal

One thing that Char Grillers does a little better than Kamado Joe is to have numbers on the vents. That way, you have good reference points for future cooks. Open both top and bottom vents fully; close top vent slightly to hold target and adjust as necessary This means, however, that any accelerant used will not have burned off and will be present to taint the flavor of your food. Also, don’t worry about the quality of the Junior just because it’s the smallest. That’s not the case at all. This grill is indeed a mighty little beast. On average, it will take anywhere from 30-45 minutes for the fire to go completely out, depending on how intense it was to begin with.

Both grills have a tripod stand, with the Kamado Joe Jr having an additional circular base for extra support and stability (it’s heavier). The stand also elevates the two cookers so their bottom sits quite far from the ground. This is great because you don’t have to worry about the heat from the bottom destroying your table. However, be careful if you use it under the rain. Water can easily get inside since there is no cap to cover the daisy wheel. It’s also prone to rust since it’s cast iron after all. As we discussed earlier, kamados work so well because they are exceptionally well insulated. That means they hold their temperature — the key to great smoking and grilling — and once you’ve hit your target temperature, they hold on to it like a kid with an ice cream cone.Keep in mind that there is no cap to protect the daisy wheel from the rain. Because of that, water can easily get inside the grill. It’s also easy to rust away since it’s cast iron after all. Fuel Miser This is a classic strategy used in standard charcoal grills. All you have to do is pile your charcoal in a pyramid shape and insert two or three fire starters. Just light the fire starters, and soon they will fire up the charcoal. While a kamado is very, very good at holding a temperature, you’ll still need to keep at least one eye on things. The one thing that makes this grill stand out is its oval shape. Unlike the round kamados, this allows you to set up the two zone cooking with ease. The Primo Junior also has a larger cooking space compared to the Joe Jr and the Minimax. The worktop is made of carefully polished, acid-proof food grade stainless steel that is resistant to heat and is easy to clean and maintain. The precise opening in the worktop is laser cut and grill stand shelf can be adjusted in 30 mm increments (7 positions) to fit your specific kamado grill model.

All frame components are E-Coated (electrophoretic cathode metal coating), shelfs and sides are hot-dipped galvanised and powder-coated to protect against heat, frost, corrosion, and any other weather influence. The Joe Jr does come with an ash tool and grill gripper. The ash tool allows you to scrape the ash out of the bottom draft door. The grill gripper comes in handy when you need to lift the cooking grate. One of the main advantages of the Akorn Jr is that it isn’t made from ceramic. Therefore, it won’t break if you happen to drop it. But that doesn’t mean it won’t perform as well as the KJ Jr. In fact, it has an insulated triple wall, which can hold heat extremely well during the colder months. At first, KJ was aiming to make high-quality ceramic kamados, loaded with bells and whistles, at prices slightly below BGE. But KJ soon realized that they could further establish themselves as a premium brand by focusing on constant innovations and improvements. Fast forward to the present day, KJ grills have gained plenty of public attention. And they’ve truly become a leader and an innovator in the industry.Kamado Joe is known for their constant innovations. They have updated their larger grills three times already. And with each update, they’ve brought better things to the game. Open both top and bottom vents fully; close top vent halfway to hold target and adjust as necessary What we ideally want is a thin blue smoke. This is a barely perceptible smoke. But trust me, if there is unburned wood in your Kamado on or within the hot coals, smoke is being generated and adding flavor, you can just barely see it. You can still fit other accessories for larger grills in the Joe Jr (hint: Flame Boss 500), but some tinkering and creativity are required. You can try to fit larger grills’ accessories into these two grills, but some modifications are required here. Differences Assembly

As we’ll discuss further soon, there are many ways to cook on a kamado, and each will require a different setup and tools. In a standard grill, you can get away with using an accelerant, then letting the coals rip until every single one is burning and ashed over. At this point, you can be sure all accelerant has burned away. The two grills function the same. You adjust the temperature using the top and bottom vents. The food also comes out the same. Price-wise, the Minimax is more expensive than the Kamado Joe Jr. Ease your way up to the right temperature slowly and patiently; don’t just let ‘er rip and think you’re going to cap it off when you get where you want to be. The Akorn Jr is lighter (40lbs). You can even reduce the overall weight by removing the cooking grate and the fire box. Steel isn’t fragile either. Therefore, it’s easier to move around by yourself. WarrantyThe best way to monitor the temperature in your Kamado is with a third-party digital thermometer. By mounting a probe inside the Kamado right at the grate, you can read the temperature where the food is cooking, and that’s what matters. The most important consideration is the cooking space. If you have a small family and don’t think you’ll need a large grill, the big green egg is a good option. Otherwise, Joe Jr. is the perfect choice for those with a large family or who want to buy a barbecue for special occasions and get-togethers with friends and relatives. The mini max has a size of 148 square inches as compared to 133 square inches. If you don’t think this size is big enough for you, go for the big green egg. Is Kamado Joe Jr better than Big Green Egg? Simply squirt a flammable liquid on your briquettes, and light it up. As the fluid burned off, it set the briquettes to smoldering. Kamados are made from a variety of materials, including stainless steel and cast aluminum. The best kamados, however, are made of ceramics. However, one thing that we like about the Minimax is the mesh screen at the ash door. This prevents any hot ember from flying out of the grill. No fire hazard and a peace of mind.

However, ceramic is more responsive when it comes to temperature changes. Opening up or closing down the vents and the temperatures will adjust accordingly in a few minutes. Now, if you care more about a strong history of quality and a solid community, definitely consider the BGE MiniMax. The KJ Jr features a set of felt gaskets, on the lid and the body. They’re soft and flexible. And because of the heavy lid pushing down when you close it, the felt does a great job of sealing the grill tightly. You won’t find any air leaks with the KJ Jr. However, the KJ Jr is way heavier than the Akorn Jr (68lbs). It’s also more fragile. Even though one person can handle the weight, it’s better if two people carry it, especially long distance or down to the boat. You don’t want to risk damaging the grill.
