About this deal

JBL has a very long history making excellent products, and we know countless people who have hung onto their older LSR 3-series speakers for years with no complaints. We expect that to be the same for the follow-up model as well. Should you buy them?

Flexible connectivity with balanced XLR and 1/4″ TRS inputs, +4dBu / -10dBV input-sensitivity switch and adjustable volume control Subjectively, yeah, they do not love to play that loud on their own. They play louder and deeper than the 305's, but they still run out of steam. Based on my results above, it is obvious the output is limited significantly somewhere above the 96dB @ 1m output level. I haven’t confirmed with JBL if this is a built-in limiter, though, I assume it is. Wrapped Around Your Finger - Glaring sound from what I assume is the synth (@ 0:26 & 0:30, for example) lights up badly. Again, I believe this is enclosure resonance. The JBL 306P MkII are an exceptional pair of studio monitors, absolutely worth buying for content creators who want a more serious window into their audio at an affordable price. Is there a better alternative? Flexible connectivity with balanced XLR and 1/4" TRS inputs, +4dBu/–10dBV input-sensitivity switch, and volume control The other notable issue is the distortion present at higher volume levels. This is a monitor that doesn’t like to be pushed hard. Once you creep up beyond 85dB, you can hear the monitor struggle, especially with lower frequencies. Soundstage is surprisingly deep (at least, with experience typically only lending itself to the concentric drivers like Kef in this regard). There are three models in the series (plus a powered subwoofer), with the last digit of the model number indicating the size of the main driver. The 306P on test here occupies the middle of the range, incorporating a 6.5-inch mid/bass unit along with a 1-inch Neodymium tweeter. Like most modern monitors, the 306Ps are an active design with bespoke onboard power amplifiers. Each monitor is bi-amped, with both low- and high-frequency drivers powered by their own 56-watt Class D amplifier, producing a maximum continuous SPL of 98dB (110dB peak) and a frequency range of 39Hz-24kHz.

JBL offers an excellent 5-year warranty on professional loudspeaker products (except enclosures). Amplifiers are warrantied for three years, and enclosures for two. The warranty covers materials and workmanship. Our Take These are my everyday speakers in my main setup. I'm no golden ears, but having listened to a lot of passive commercial and DIY speakers in this price range they are definitely my favorite, except for maybe the DIY Amiga towers (though that is a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison)

Subjective listening varied between the nearfield at 1 meter and the farfield at 4 meters. Subjective listening was conducted at 80-95dB at these distances. Higher volumes were done simply to test the output capability in case one wants to try to sit further away. John Mayer’s “Free Fallin” - When he says, “she’s a good girl”, the word “good” tends to jump out of the mix at you in the 1-2kHz region. I used my RTA app to watch for where this peak occurs (in the nearfield, of course). The RTA shows the peakiness between 1.6kHz to 1.8kHz which is exactly where there is a +3dB jump in the on-axis response (apparently caused from port resonance).

Dual integrated, custom Class-D amplifiers provide 82 watts of power for high output and dynamic range But for recreational listening, as Amir noted, those kinds of narrow anomalies really aren't as much of a problem as you might think from looking at a graph. (I was relieved that his subjective impressions matched up with mine. I've seen people freak out over that 1.6khz dip when looking at graphs alone)In the nearfield (~1 foot to mitigate room), the first note sounds very thin and not at all in line with the other notes. Audacity indicates all 4 notes should be at roughly the same audible level. This note - at ~ 225Hz - is right where a dip in the response indicates a possible resonance (cabinet; driver?). When used alongside Pro Tools 12 and our interface for mixing, we had a very easy time balancing mixes, adjusting equalization settings, and adding compression, finding that our mixes always translated as expected to other devices and listening settings. Our only gripe was that the speakers had a small amount of amp hiss when in a very quiet room with no sound playing, but that’s to be expected of any powered speakers with this volume potential and at this price point, and it became unnoticeable whenever sound was playing at any volume.

The speakers were placed on stands in a typical near-field listening setup — an equilateral triangle about four feet apart and four feet each from the listening position — with the tweeters positioned at ear level. Because of their placement and the room treatment, we didn’t need to employ EQ or high frequency trim adjustments. We set the volume to the halfway position on each speaker for the majority of listening, though we did raise it and lower it evenly on either side at various points during testing. Performance We see more of distortion between 1 and 2 kHz in the larger 308P than in 306P. The larger woofer seems unhappier in the higher range than the smaller one in 306P. Or there are sample variations.

JBL 306P MkII Powered Studio Monitor Features:

But that is a relatively high level, to begin with, and you won’t want to mix at that level for extended periods. But it is still worth highlighting if you want to crank it up occasionally. As with sub-bass delivery, pairing the monitors with a subwoofer will give you much better performance at higher levels.
