Between the Guardians of the Galaxy and Jumanji franchises, Gillan is now an action star. So why does she spend Gunpowder Milkshake doing an ineffective Uma Thurman impression instead of cultivating her own take on Sam? The film opens with a beautiful shot of a slash of red light illuminating only Sam’s eyes in a dark, blood-spattered apartment, but then its first hour drags because of the way Gillan mistakes stiffness for seriousness. If everyone is super cool, and super deadly, and super nonchalant, then you need to put even more work into making the characters stand apart. They'll need specific quirks, competing goals, faults and obsessions, some key nub of characterization even if its superficial (a guy with one eye he's insecure about it, etc.). With Gunpowder Milkshake, there's nothing to work with. The screenwriters made this so much harder on themselves. I guess we're merely supposed to be won over by the casting and the imagery of these bad ladies holding powerful weaponry. The protagonist is boring. She is the familiar hired killer who grows an inconvenient conscience. That's an acceptable starting point but the moral growth is hindered when her young charge, the little girl that forces her paradigm shift, wants to be her apprentice to learn to kill people. The fraught mother/daughter relationship resorts to a lot of "I didn't want this life for you,""It's the only life I've known" roundabout conversations, and neither furthers our understanding of either side. The feminism- My problem here isn't that the film is feminist, it is that it thinks its audience is so stupid that it needs to club us over the head with it. All of the good guys are girls and all of the bad guys are men. I think the best example of the heavy-handedness of this is the villains motive. Throughout the movie we know he's mad because the main character, Sam, killed his son. This is already an understandable villain motive. It doesn't need any more context really. But the movie adds the context that the villain feels like an alien among his wife and daughters and his son was the only one he could relate to because of their shared manliness. So now the villain is sexist, but it's just shoe-horned in. It's not built up at all, he just goes on a sexist rant about his annoying wife and daughters randomly. Ritman, Alex (July 6, 2021). Do they redeem a bizarre ending that unnecessarily absolves Sam of any wrongdoing, but of course leaves open room for a sequel? They do not. But when Gunpowder Milkshake has so few successes, Headey’s half-smirk, Bassett’s exasperated line deliveries, Gugino’s set jaw as she steps behind a mounted machine gun, and Yeoh’s effortlessly cool eyepatch-wearing will have to do.

Nevertheless, there are some thrills to Gunpowder Milkshake for those who are willing to ignore the tedium. A fight in a dentist’s office, with a gun and a scalpel taped to Sam’s hands as she whirls, spins, and takes on three baddies, takes its time capturing Gillan’s body, from her awkwardly efficient flailing to her split-second problem-solving. A car chase where Emily sits on Sam’s lap and helps her drive around a parking garage, zooming and drifting and reversing away from two cars of pursuers, is well-paced. And although the major mid-film fight scene suffers from such jarring editing that even Michael Bay might say, “Hey, guys, cool it,” the second hour of Gunpowder Milkshake absolutely improves when Headey, Gugino, Bassett, and Yeoh have more screen time. If the barebones of Gunpowder Milkshake sound a little dug up then even the flesh that’s been added gives off a musty whiff, from the double-crossing bosses to the fetishistic obsession with guns to the eye-rolling decision to humanise an assassin with the addition of a cute child, a particularly tiresome genre trope. But while there’s barely a second you won’t be able to predict, films such as this live and die by the quality of their action set pieces rather than their inventive plotting and Papushado is, if nothing else, a skilled stage manager. The bright, flashy aesthetic means that the sequences have a rare easy-to-follow clarity often missing in the murk of other action films and while the downside is that this often highlights the budgetary restrictions, it makes for an undeniably immersive experience. The almost two-hour runtime is a little overambitious given the thinness of the material but Papushado overstuffs his film with action, appealing to thirsty Friday night audiences eager for non-stop spectacle (a deftly shot diner shootout in the final act is particularly impressive). We had organic complications and potential solutions that involved both characters having to rely upon one another. That is solid screenwriting and finding a way to spice up an ordinary parking garage chase sequence. By the end of this sequence, my hopes started to dwindle because Sam reverted to her earlier super cool, impervious version. She knew every exact move to make, and the small-scale car chase started losing my interest even with the extra driving dynamic.
