The GO 3, when placed in the Action Pod, bears a strong resemblance to a GoPro, right down to the graphical user interface. The Action Pod's touch controls were also intuitive, borrowing the menu system from other Insta360 action cameras and tuning it to the Go 3's capabilities. Within the settings, I was able to do things on the touch display that I couldn't do in the smartphone app, such as turn off the LED light on the front of the camera and mute the beeping noise.

Two of the most important presets here are labeled "Video" and "FreeFrame Video," the latter of which removes all stabilization and in-camera cropping. The GO 3 boasts FlowState 2.0, a digital image stabilization feature built-in to smooth out your footage and minimize camera shake and vibration. There’s hope for Gyroflow compatibility in the future since the camera can also record gyro data, but at the time of writing it’s not compatible yet. The Go 3 offers three levels of stabilization, each coming with a description to help you choose the most appropriate level for your needs. However, if you’re using the camera on an FPV drone, it’s advisable to turn off the stabilization feature and apply stabilization when exporting the footage from the camera. Battery life isn’t the Go 3’s most impressive attribute. The camera itself offers only around 45 minutes of 1080p recording time when flying solo; things get a lot better when embedded in the Action Pod, with 170 minutes available.

The touchscreen is both responsive and reasonably intuitive to use; the camera itself is water resistant to a depth of 5m, while the Action Pod case is IPX4 water resistant; and it’s not heavy or bulky, either, with the Go 3 weighing a mere 35.5g and the Action Pod a further 96.3g. The Go 3 boasts a variety of advanced features that set it apart from traditional action cameras. One of its standout features is the “Auto Editing” mode. Using artificial intelligence, the camera identifies the highlights of your video and automatically creates an engaging montage, perfectly synced to music and ready for sharing on social media. This is great time-saver for people going on vacation and doesn’t spend too much time on editing long videos. In Cinebench R23, the Surface Go 3 scores just 1,277 points which is nearly four times slower than the Surface Pro 8, and this SKU is a little over half the cost. And in PCMark 10, we get a score of just 2,596 points, which is the lowest score we’ve ever seen in that test. But laptops are one thing, it’s also important just how this laptop handles day-to-day. Video recorded in low light situations can look good, too, but you’ll need to be much more careful how you hold the camera. I found the image stabilisation struggled to maintain smoothness without introducing shimmering artefacts into clips, even when I was indulging in relatively gentle activities. Given the camera's price, I was impressed with the selection of accessories it ships with, so I put them to the test too. It was great to get a sense of how the Go 3 changes a filming workflow thanks to its magnetic mounting and wireless ActionPod compared to traditional action cameras.

The Insta360 Go 3 offers FlowState electronic image stabilisation and horizon levelling, and it’s extremely effective– able to transform shaky handheld sequences into smooth scenes that almost look like they could have been shot using a gimbal. There are three levels available, but you can also just shoot in the camera’s FreeFrame video setting and subsequently add either horizon-levelled or FPV-style image stabilisation in post-processing.
