About this deal

For topical calcineurin inhibitors, the guidance is different. The manufacturer recommends that emollients should not be used within 2 hours of applying tacrolimus (Protopic). In practice, this means using leave-on emollients and/or soap substitutes, and then leaving a 2-hour gap before applying tacrolimus. With pimecrolimus (Elidel), no gap is needed.

Emollients used for eczema tend to be bland and non-perfumed. However, some creams contain preservatives, fragrances and other additives. Occasionally, some people become allergic (sensitised) to an ingredient. This can make the skin inflammation worse rather than better. A particularly notable preparation is aqueous cream which was once commonly used. However, it is now known that there is a high rate of reactions to this product and therefore it is now less commonly used. Although emollients are not flammable in themselves or when on the skin, when dried on to fabric they act as an accelerant, increasing the speed of ignition and intensity of the fire. This accelerant effect significantly reduces the time available to act to put out a clothing or bedding fire before serious and fatal burns are sustained.

Emollients

AproDerm Gel is a highly moisturising gel, without the greasiness of an ointment, which actively draws and retains moisture within the skin and provides a protective barrier to help reduce dryness and irritation. It is also an effective pre-bathing emollient so can be applied to skin prior to bathing to prevent it from drying out even further, whilst protecting it from the irritant effects that can be caused by washing and bathing products such as soaps, shower gels and shampoos.

Moisturizers modify the rate of water loss, with active ingredients of moisturizers falling into one of two categories: occlusives and humectants. [5] Certain activities, such as gardening, can irritate the skin. It may help to apply an emollient before doing these.Soap substitutes should be used for hand-washing, showering and bathing (although during the Covid-19 pandemic, people with eczema were advised to wash their hands first with soap and then with an emollient, as emollients were not considered effective at removing the Covid-19 virus). You can either use an emollient product designed specifically for washing, or your usual leave-on emollient as a soap substitute – simply apply it all over your body, just before or during showering or bathing, and then rinse it off. All leave-on emollients can be used for washing apart from 50:50 Ointment, which is very greasy. Soap substitutes may take a little getting used to as they don’t foam like ordinary products, but they are nevertheless effective at cleansing the skin. Moisturizers are also widely used in sunscreens, antiperspirants, skin cleansers, shaving creams, aftershaves, and hair tonics.

There is currently no regulation over use of the term "hypoallergenic", and even pediatric skin products with the label were found to still contain allergens. [19] [20] Emollients are medical moisturisers used to treat eczema and other dry skin conditions. Unlike cosmetic moisturisers, they are unperfumed and do not have ‘anti-ageing’ additives. Emollients have been used for over 5,000 years and form an essential part of the therapy for all dry skin conditions. Emollients are safe and effective – a good skin care routine using emollients can soothe, moisturise and protect the skin, helping to reduce the number of eczema flares. Why are emollients so effective? Atopic eczema. This is caused by a problem from within the body. If you have atopic eczema you are born with a tendency for your skin to become inflamed. Various parts of the skin tend to flare up with inflammation from time to time.

there is a fire risk with all paraffin-containing emollients, regardless of paraffin concentration, and it also cannot be excluded with paraffin-free emollients. A similar risk may apply for other products which are applied to the skin over large body areas, or in large volumes for repeated use for more than a few days Emollients are often used to help manage dry, itchy or scaly skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and ichthyosis.

Various emollient preparations come as bath additives and shower gels. These are now not considered useful for most people as they is no evidence that they are beneficial. Since 2018, when a study showed no benefits from bath/shower emollients, these are no longer commonly available on prescription in the UK.Oatmeal-containing products (e.g. Aveeno ®) show no superior action, are not routinely recommended and are non-formulary in NHS Lanarkshire. Risk of severe and fatal burns Pump dispensers are better than pots because they are less likely to harbour germs. If a pot is needed, a clean spoon or spatula should be used to get the contents out, rather than fingers. Use a clean spoon or spatula to remove emollients from a pot or tub. This reduces the risk of infections from contaminated pots. Risk of slipping a b "Fire tests show dangers of paraffin-based skin creams". BBC News . Retrieved 31 December 2020.
