That is much quieter than most of its premium cordless competitors and the sound is an inoffensive drone – as opposed to the dentist-drill sound of some.
The motorized brush floor head glides easily across carpets and hard floors, and I didn't spot any hair getting tangled around the brushbar. It features some of the best built-in LED lights I've seen, to help you clean in dark areas such as under furniture. On the downside, it has few of the features that are slowly becoming absolute essentials on a cordless vacuum. While I could live with the clunky emptying (and actually, I’m slightly taken by it), I would find it hard to introduce a vacuum into my household that doesn’t comb hair tangles out of its floor head. On carpet, a little more was left behind. I measured 96% of the spill collected, though a visible dusting remained after the first pass. I found it was best to employ the upholstery brush, as the velvety bristles had just enough agitation to gather the remnants from our short pile carpet. Clip-on tools include a 2-in-1 furniture nozzle with pull-down dusting brush and a bonkers long and very flexible crevice tool. That is ideal for getting down behind radiators, but takes some wielding to accurately pinpoint spots of dust. A good-length metal tube optionally extends reach for all tools. Clips and fittings between tools and tubes are top-notch. The Turbo mode is a very, very different story, albeit one you must manually engage every time you switch on. Punch that button on top and the BCS122GB does a Tesla and goes ‘Insane’. Suction and airflow are multiples of the normal power mode, delivering great cleaning ability. Jekyll and Hyde? You bet. The dustbin capacity is a compact 0.3 litres. I found this to be a little too compact, as I had to empty it a few times to complete a clean of our three-bedroom house. This will be less of an issue if you have a smaller area to clean, of course, and it's more than enough for vacuuming the car.
The Bosch Unlimited has two cleaning modes – standard and “Turbo” – which you can toggle between by pressing a button on top of the vacuum’s pistol-grip handle. While the standard mode will get you plenty of battery life, it isn’t particularly effective, producing only 4.5kPa of suction. The configuration of the Bosch Unlimited will be familiar to most people by now; if you’ve seen a Dyson V8, you know the deal. The vacuum motor, battery and dust collection bin are all housed in a compact, handheld unit that you connect your cleaning attachments to. In constant use, we got single-battery run times a fair bit longer than Bosch’s claims. These ranged from a truly staggering 89 minutes on normal power mode with just a detail tool attached, to a fairly respectable nine minutes on Turbo power mode with the floorhead running. An hour and half of cleaning from a single battery is our new vacuum cleaner runtime record by miles – and you get two batteries. Three hours of vacuuming anyone? No, us neither.Emptying the collection bin is a fairly old-school endeavour. It sits at right angles to the extension wand, so this needs removing before the bin can be extracted from the handheld unit. The filter is then lifted out, leaving just the cup full of dust to be tipped into the bin.
