About this deal

All cameras need some form of power source, as they cannot operate on unicorn pixie dust. While sometimes they can be powered by batteries this is not recommended because battery lives tend to be low and you don’t want to be regularly disturbing the nest box when you are changing batteries. Mains power supplies are the only reliable way of powering the cameras 24/7. This does mean you need to run a cable from the nearest power source to the box. This isn’t always convenient for some, but you can buy power extension cables inexpensively, which can be buried underground and hidden away.

Climate: In excessively rainy areas, it is best to mount a birdhouse in a sheltered area, while in a very hot region, a cooler, shaded location is essential. The entrance hole should always be facing away from prevailing winds to help protect delicate hatchlings from stiff breezes or wind-driven rain. An alternative to using a nail or screw is to tie the box to the tree. Wire and synthetic twine both work well and, if boxes are tied loosely, they can be edged upwards as the tree grows. Boxes can also be hung from a horizontal branch if they come with a suitable hanger ( e.g. Schwegler 1B). Fixing to a fence Eco Starling Nest Box Location: Ideally, the house should be in a private area somewhat remote from nearby feeders or bird baths where a lot of other activity could make brooding parents anxious. Placing a birdhouse in a more concealed area helps camouflage the house, and nearby branches for perching will give adult birds a good place to watch over their family. Some birds, however, such as bluebirds and purple martins, do prefer birdhouses in more open areas. To improve daytime light levels inside the box to enhance colour images on the camera an LED lamp can be installed that doesn’t disturb the birds. Why do I have to run power cables? Before choosing the type of camera you need to work out the distance between the nest box and your viewing area. This is because wireless cameras have limitations in terms of range and it will also inform you how much cabling you need to run. Even wireless cameras need a power source, so measure the distance from the box to your TV, computer or network router. Which type of camera to choose?Wired cameras offer reliability and more robust images, often for a better price. Wireless cameras provide the convenience of not having to run as much cabling, although they still need powering from the mains. Wired cameras Pros: Great image quality and camera build. Very easy to set up thanks to instructions, can be used on smartphones and tablets. This cuts down on the hassle of laying long wires, but note the greater the distance between the camera and the receiver, the poorer the image quality. The camera is powered via a mains connection, so the setup isn't entirely cable-free.

External surfaces treated with water-based non-toxic non-volatile wood treatment, with active constituent natural borate mineral salt. Take your 1.4 metre long plank of wood – which is preferably an FSC approved plywood, oak or beech variety – and take out your tape measure.Height: Different species have different preferences for the heights at which they will build their nests (see list below). Higher houses unattached to trees or posts that can be climbed are generally safer from feral cats and similar predators, but they can be more difficult to mount, clean, and monitor. It is most important that the house is mounted safely and securely, even if the height may not be ideal or convenient for birders.

Fresh water is important for birds as both a source of drinking water and for bathing. Again, once you start providing clean and fresh water local wildlife will come to rely on the source. Keep it topped up. PlantsReview comment: “The local blue tits couldn't wait to set up home in this desirable property. We can see that they have great taste with their internal furnishing choices. Great to be able to observe nesting activity without disturbing them in the slightest. Next season we will know to alter the camera angle slightly to be able to see more of the floor area and less of the exit wall.” Wired bird box cameras feature long lengths of cable to ensure reliability and high-quality images, providing some of the sharpest video. That said, these cameras range from the most basic image quality to HD. The choice is yours and it just depends on your budget. Wireless cameras Monitoring and Cleaning: No matter which birds will be using the house, birders must be able to access the house regularly for proper cleaning and, if desired, to monitor any hatchlings. Mount the house where there is sturdy, level ground below if a stool or ladder will be required to reach it. Use a hand sander to smooth out any rough edges, then take your water-based paint and give the bird box a nice coat of colour. It doesn’t matter what colour you choose, birds aren’t fussy! Step seven: Mount your bird box

If you’re installing a hole-fronted bird box, it should be set securely at two to four metres high. Which direction to face your bird box For those installing an open-fronted nest bird box then, as the Wildlife Trust points out, you need to place it in a safe place to settle, which may well be in a tree, hedge or bush in your garden. The open box needs to be placed under two metres and hidden in vegetation. This location and setup is the ideal home for robins and wrens. How high should you put a bird box? If you already have a little know-how around camera and CCTV technology, you may want to consider the BW CCTV camera as a budget option. The camera can output in PAL and NTSC, and offers up some controls over gamma and aperture. For inspiration on your front garden, take a look at our front garden ideas. Step two: Measure out the plankSafety: Regardless of where the house is mounted, it should be sturdy and resistant to wobbling, slipping, or falling. Baffles placed above and below the house can help deter predators such as raccoons, rats, and snakes, and the birdhouse itself should be designed to be safe. For the best quality finish, we would recommend hiring a professional carpenter or handyman to not only build your bird boxes but to ensure that they are secured safely to a tree or your house, wherever you may decide. For the last section, mark 25cm on one side (the remaining length should be 20cm), and 20cm on the other side (the remaining length should be 25cm). Then, take the ruler and join the marks together to make a diagonal line Step three: Cut the plank Next, measure the following areas along the length of the wood and mark them out using a ruler and a pencil. If you meet these criteria you’re well on your way to having some blue tits and sparrows to view on your bird box camera. How to attach a camera to a bird box
