development in relation to aid and trade, industrialisation, urbanisation, the environment, and war and conflictEvaluate the view that the extent of secularisation has been exaggerated (20) – an essay plan covering arguments and evidence for and against the view in the question. Beliefs in society revision bundle for sale What is Religion? – An introductory post, covering the difference between substantive and functional definitions of religion. Sociological explanations of religion, science and ideology including both Christian and non-Christian religious traditions Religion and Science – Are They Compatible? – a counter-post to the one above. It focuses on the similarities between science and religion, rather than the differences between the two. The relationship between social change, stability, and religious beliefs, practices and organisations

I’ve found Infographics extremely useful for livening up many topics in A-level sociology, and I’ve developed an interest in learning how to create my own. Before you start you need to satisfy yourself that you have good syllabus notes to work from. Although most textbooks are fine in places they have a tendency to either not give enough detail on certain topics or give too much information (which can be just as bad). Ask “How” and “Why” questions when revising and try to connect ideas (this method is called “elaboration”) The relationship between Postmodernity and religion – A hub post containing links to the theories of Bauman, Giddens, Lyon and Heelas on how religion changes with postmodernity.Evalaute – POWER/ BIAS/ VALUE FREEDOM? Who developed the concept/ theory – whose interests does it serve? For example, “x” theor is ethnocentric because….

Postmodernity and The New Age – Paul Heelas argues that while the New Age Movement may appear postmodern, it is not! Class, gender, ethnicity and religion Cults – are the most loose knit and ‘disorganised’ of religious organisations. These tend demand very low commitment from members and are often have a business-client relationship. They fit well with postmodern society. World Rejecting, World Affirming and World Accommodating NRMs The authors are experienced chief and principal examiners, teachers and authors who have written extensively for AS and A level students and teachers. As long as you have great syllabus notes and lots of past paper questions the rest is really up to you. If you want to score an A* or A grade you need to act like someone who’s going to score these grades. What is secularisation? – a basic definition is ‘the declining significance of religion in society’, but this post digs a little deeper. Why are older people more religious than younger people? – Is this because of older people being closer to death? Or is it social changes that mean it’s more of a generational effect? The significance of religion and religiosity in the contemporary world, including the nature and extent of secularisation This 4th edition of Collins’ respected AQA A-level Sociology series is updated for the 2015 AQA Sociology specifications. Covering Year 2 of A-level, it will help students master the knowledge and skills they need to excel in their study and engage with contemporary society. Highlighting the ‘insanity of normality’ – raising awareness of how ‘perfectly ordinary’ everyday aspirations, habitual actions, and ‘typical lifestyles’ have negative consequences for the self (in terms of physical and mental health), the reproduction of society and the environment. Good data visualisations are powerfully efficient educational tools: they are the most engaging way of presenting a lot of quantitative information in a condensed form and I’ve found them especially useful in A-level sociology for livening up topics such as ‘gender and subject choice’ and ‘family and household diversity’. Malinowksi’s Perspective on Religion – more in-depth class notes. Malinowski differs from Durkheim in that he did not believe that when people worshiped religion they were really worshiping society. He tended to focus more on the positive functions religion performed for the individual rather than society.

While the primary focus of the blog started out targeting A-level sociology students specifically, I have since expanded the scope of the content and included a range of material that should be of relevance to students studying sociology more generally, history, economics, politics, business studies and education and both A-level and degree level, focussing more recently on critical analysis of contemporary news events and summaries of the latest social research and statistical releases. Why are women more religious than men (1) – c lass notes focusing on the extent to which different gender roles might explain this. Disengagement as evidence of secularisation – Disengagement refers to the process of religious institutions becoming less involved in political and social life. This is some of the strongest evidence for secularisation in the U.K. Exploring and raising awareness of alternative lifestyles and networks which offer more self-fulfilling and sustainable ways of being. Denominations – which share many of the features of churches, but are generally smaller. These are more appealing to minority groups and do not have a monopoly on the truth. These resources contain all the core sociology knowledge students need for a through introduction sociology, illustrated with numerous up to date contemporary case studies and statistics.
