As a curious beginner or a seasoned whisky drinker, Aberlour has managed to create a fairly young whisky that is mature enough to do both. Get yourself a bottle this summer. There is definitely nothing wrong with Aberlour 14 years Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky. I've been a whisky drinker for several years now but my tastes are pointed towards options from Islay. Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a whisky aimed at the mass market and casual drinkers who want to experience the best of the various whisky regions without diving into expensive versions and limited editions. Nose: Dark and rich sherry notes. Plenty of cocoa powder and dark chocolate, with hints of balsamic and aniseed. It has a damp earthiness to it, as well as hints of leather. Very intense, yet balanced, but not extremely complex. There are only a few distilleries truly known for releasing sherry matured whiskies, and Aberlour is certainly one of them. Their entire core range is highlighted by sherry influenced drams, with the Aberlour a’bunadh probably the most well-known example. Aberlour 14 Year Old Double Cask has recently joined their core range alongside the 12, 16, and 18 Year Old releases. It is a combination of first-fill American oak (bourbon) casks and Oloroso sherry casks. The finish is of decent length. The sweetness and richness stretch things out as the individual elements begin to fade - first the honey/toffee, then the green apples, then the dried fruit notes and finally the cereal and baking spice characteristics.

While you don’t encounter many Aberlour whiskies from independent bottlers, the distillery itself does release single cask bottlings every once in a while. They do this mostly in collaboration with a third party, in this case La Maison du Whisky, the French retail outlet and importer. The colour is golden amber and the nose has a lovely sweetness and richness to it. Aromas of brown sugar, caramel and heather honey mingle with some dried fruit (think of raisin, sultana and candied orange peel especially) initially. Then a hint of ripe brambles comes through along with a good pinch of baking spice (imagine cinnamon and all-spice in particular) and a distinct oat-like quality.

When should you buy a bottle of the Aberlour? This is a bottle for those who enjoy their single malt whisky and want something high quality at a fair price. It's a good bottle to experiment with Speyside whiskies if you have not had much experience and the light flavours mean it is a great whisky for warm evenings and summer days. Once a novelty when The Balvenie started finishing whisky, this is now a very common (almost traditional) procedure that doesn’t really stand out from the crowd. That said, Aberlour has a long history of double maturation so they know what they’re doing.

Today’s particular release is from ten years ago already, so the whisky for this was actually distilled in the early nineties. It is a Double Cask whisky, meaning it matured both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks.
